Trans Lives in a Globalizing World: Rights, Identities and Politics: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Trans Lives in a Globalizing World: Rights, Identities and Politics" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This volume seeks to explore contemporary trans lives in a world that is both global and increasingly globalizing, examining the nuances of the rights, identities, and politics that make up the varied spectrum of what has come to be included under the largely Western imposed label of trans.Trans identities and rights have become increasingly prominent in the social imagination in recent years, and in a growing number of locales have also become hot button political issues. As trans individuals are demanding, and gaining, their rights, these debates are bringing issues of trans lives to the forefront of politics and into social discussions in nearly every country in the world today. In a series of essays covering the key themes of Identities, Rights, and Politics, this interdisciplinary collection presents an international range of topics spanning human rights and asylum seekers, to the Hijras of South Asia, and gender-affirming surgeries, all placing trans lives in a global(ized) context. This is an important contribution from a diverse group of established and emerging scholars seeking to position trans and transgender research in a global framework. It will be of key interest to researchers in Trans Studies, Gender Studies, Sexuality Studies, Cultural and Media Studies, Sociology, Politics, and Anthropology and for introductory courses in gender and LGBT issues.

J.M. Dewey has studied and been published extensively in the area of medical decision-making, specifically transgender mental health and medical services. Her work helps shape sociology discussions that help critically analyze criminal, legal, and health-care systems as well as understand how these systems impact the daily lives of those who must navigate them. Her work also explores how medical decision-making challenges and perpetuates beliefs about gender. More recently, Dr. Dewey examined how gender, specifically masculinity, is used in training United States police recruits and the influence this training has on community-police relations and officer safety.
Chassitty N. Fiani is a recent graduate of the doctoral program in clinical psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her early research focused on identity and self-concept related to several constructs including social media engagement, adaptivity of coping, and aggression. In most recent years, she has turned her focus to improving the ways that mental health providers and criminal justice systems understand and interact with people who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming (TGNC). In addition to her research, Chassitty has worked clinically with a wide range of clients in city and state psychiatric centers, on an Assertive Community Treatment team, and she has conducted evaluations for mental health diversion for offenders with mental illness. Chassitty works from the framework of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to approach suffering in a wholesome, affirming manner. Chassitty is passionate about actively disseminating the findings of her research and clinical work through peer-reviewed publication avenues as well as through leading trainings and workshops on how to provide affirming and culturally competent care to LGBTQ+ populations.
