...[A] milestone on the path toward a more sophisticated analysis of a key feature of human cruelty...[This volumes] goal is exploration and inspiration of further research in, and discussion of, the history of massacres...[It] does an excellent job in doing exactly this, and I am sure it will serve for a long time as a major reference book in the broader field of mass violence studies. Thomas Khne, Strassler Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies, Clark University

Massacres and mass killings have always marked if not shaped the history of the world and as such are subjects of increasing interest among historians. The premise underlying this collection is that massacres were an integral, if not accepted part (until quite recently) of warfare, and that they were often fundamental to the colonizing process in the early modern and modern worlds. Making a deliberate distinction between massacre and genocide, the editors call for an entirely separate and new subject under the rubric of Massacre Studies, dealing with mass killings that are not genocidal in intent. This volume offers a reflection on the nature of mass killings and extreme violence across regions and across centuries, and brings together a wide range of approaches and case studies.

Philip G. Dwyer is Associate Professor in Modern European History at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has published widely on the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. His monograph Napoleon: The Path to Power, 1769-1799 (2008) won the Australian National Biography Award.

Lyndall Ryan is Conjoint Professor of History at the University of Newcastle. Her classic text, The Aboriginal Tasmanians, first published in 1981, opened up the field of colonial frontier violence in Australia. Since then she has published widely on settler massacres on the Australian colonial frontier.

THEATRES OF VIOLENCE
War and Genocide
General Editors: Omer Bartov, Brown University; A. Dirk Moses, European University Institute, Florence, Italy/University of Sydney
There has been a growing interest in the study of war and genocide, not from a traditional military history perspective, but within the framework of social and cultural history. This series offers a forum for scholarly works that reflect these new approaches.
The Berghahn series Studies on War and Genocide has immeasurably enriched the English-language scholarship available to scholars and students of genocide and, in particular, the Holocaust.Totalitarian Movements and Political Religions

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Theatres of Violence Massacre Mass Killing and Atrocity Throughout History - image 2
U nlike the claims made for genocide and the Holocaust, there is nothing unique about massacre. It is part and parcel of the evolution of humanity and has been a constant theme throughout recorded history. The papers in this volume are based on an international interdisciplinary symposium on the massacre in history organized by Philip Dwyer and Lyndall Ryan at Newcastle, Australia, in September 2008. A number of the essays published here were presented at the conference but have been reworked, revised and expanded in the light of discussions that took place during and after the conference. In addition to the contributors we would particularly like to thank Paul Bartrop, David Cahill, Robert Cribb and Piotr Kosicki whose presence and participation made the discussions at the symposium so worthwhile. Moreover, we solicited a number of other essays in order to fill lacunas and offer a more complete picture of mass killings throughout history. They shed different light on some well known massacres, as well as massacres that are less well known, touching on issues of gender, race, religion and empire. Longer versions of three of the chapters have been published elsewhere: Harpers chapter in The William and Mary Quarterly, 64:3 (2007); Dwyers piece in War in History, 16:4 (2009); and Ryans chapter in Journal of Australian Studies, 34:3 (2010). The authors would like to thank the publishers for permission to use revised and updated versions of that material.
The maps have been prepared by Robert Anders, School of Geography & Environmental Studies, University of Tasmania. The maps of the Americas incorporate data sourced from Environmental Systems Research Institutes (ESRI) sample data disks, ESRI Data & Maps 9.3, distributed under license agreement with ESRIs ArcGIS software. Permission has been granted for use in map production by the data vendors who have supplied data on the sample data disks, which are protected under copyright laws. The vendors acknowledged and thanked for the provision of their data include DMTI Spatial Inc., USGS, ArcWorld Supplement, US Census, ArcUSA 1:25M, and Tele Atlas. The Australian maps are based on source data provided by Geoscience Australia.
The project could not have got off the ground without the support of the School of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Newcastle. We would also like to thank the anonymous readers at Berghahn for their suggestions. This book is part of an ongoing research programme encompassing aspects of the history of violence in the modern world. It is our hope that his volume will not only be used in the classroom but stimulate further debate and reflection about the nature of mass killing in the modern world.
INTRODUCTION
THE MASSACRE AND HISTORY
Theatres of Violence Massacre Mass Killing and Atrocity Throughout History - image 3
Philip G. Dwyer and Lyndall Ryan
M assacres have occurred throughout recorded history and are even known to have existed in pre-recorded times. Archaeologists have found, for example, evidence of a Neolithic massacre in Talheim, Germany, which is believed to have taken place over seven thousand years ago. The remains of thirty-four victims, male and female and ranging in age from two to sixty, were unearthed during digs in 1983 and 1984. They were bound and most killed by a blow to the left temple before being thrown into a pit. It is a scene that has been played out countless times, almost as though it were part and parcel of warfare, although until quite recently scholars have paid scant attention to and failed to explain the dynamics and indeed the psychology of massacre.
