Z AMBIA IS A BEAUTIFUL LARGE COUNTRY IN SOUTH CENTRAL Africa. It's a land where lions roam grassy plains, elephants plod through verdant bush, and hippos bathe in the great Zambezi River. It's a land where termites build sandcastles to the sky, and the rainy time of year is called the Emerald Season, because everything turns so green. Vast, remote stretches of wilderness provide astonishing vistas and a rich diversity of wildlife.
Although it's a landlocked countrymeaning it has no coastlineZambia has a wealth of water in its many rivers and lakes. There are at least eighteen spectacular waterfalls, some of them in such remote areas that there's no road leading to them. For hardier tourists, willing to hike to secluded places, waterfall tours are becoming a popular attraction. The greatest of the falls, however, is easily seen in the southern town of Livingstone. Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, which marks the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, is not only Africa's grandest waterfall, but it is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke that Thunders), as it is also called, lives up to its name.
Nature is a national treasure in Zambia. Another is the Zambian people themselves. Most are descendants of the indigenous Bantu-speaking tribes who lived in this region for centuries, and they have kept their traditional culture alive against great odds. Many of today's Zambians remain loyal to their tribal chiefs, successors of the precolonial African kings, even as they are patriotic, voting members of the modern state.
