    Preface

Due to its massive online presence, federal governmentrelated information can be difficult to find, even with an Internet search engine. The United States Government Internet Directory is intended to lead its users to valuable government information that could otherwise be overlooked. The Directory organizes selected government and nongovernment Web sites into subject-themed chapters, covering topics such as Transportation and Energy, with an additional chapter for organizations and agencies that are either privately funded or funded significantly by entities beyond the U.S. government. This subject-based approach allows users to narrow their searches to solely encompass their fields of interest; this type of directed and specifically aimed method streamlines and tailors results for quick and efficient use. This book has been designed to help meet the research needs of businesses, teachers, students, and citizens in the United States and around the world. It also provides a resource that more casual users can employ to discover the breadth and depth of government-related information and services available online.

The Directory features entries for approximately 1,800 government and nongovernment websites. Each site was chosen for its value individually and as a part of the whole publication. Each site is described to help users define its role and its value as a resource. Website descriptions can include information about the sponsoring agency, useful or unique aspects of the site, and, when pertinent, lists of some of the publications hosted on the site. Appendixes provide Internet addresses for individual members of Congress, standing and joint committees, and embassies of the United States abroad and foreign countries within the United States.

Special features in the directory include a Quick Guide to the websites of major federal agencies, libraries, and data sources, as well as organizational charts for federal, congressional, and Cabinet-level agencies.

The authors and site maintainers of the websites listed in this book provide a valuable service for writers, editors, students, and researchers alikewithout them, this book would not be possible.
