Founding editor: Jo Campling
Social Work is a multi-skilled profession, centred on people. Social workers need skills in problem-solving, communication, critical reflection and working with others to be effective in practice.
The British Association of Social Workers (www.basw.co.uk) has always been conscious of its role in setting guidelines for practice and in seeking to raise professional standards. The concept of the Practical Social Work series was developed to fulfil a genuine professional need for a carefully planned, coherent, series of texts that would contribute to practitioners skills, development and professionalism.
Newly relaunched to meet the ever-changing needs of the social work profession, the series has been reviewed and revised with the help of the BASW Editorial Advisory Board:
Peter Beresford
Jim Campbell
Monica Dowling
Brian Littlechild
Mark Lymbery
Fraser Mitchell
Steve Moore
Under their guidance each book marries practice issues with theory and research in a compact and applied format: perfect for students, practitioners and educators.

Introduction
There are many reasons for writing a book which positions practice learning at the very centre of social work education. Placements have always provided essential, dynamic and memorable learning experiences for social work students and they form the central core of the social work education programme. It is perhaps the sound emphasis on practice learning that sets social work apart as a fully integrated and practice-led profession. The recent full-scale changes to social work education and practice learning certainly provided an impetus for the book. Social work students, practice educators and social work practitioners all need information, support and encouragement to understand these changes and reflect on what these mean for their own learning and ongoing development and also what the impact will be for those that will be helped by social workers at different times in their life.
A refreshing development within more recently validated social work degree programmes is the increasingly joined up, seamless approach to helping students link up their academic learning with the direct learning experiences gained during their placement. The holistic focus on practice enhanced by critical reflection which integrates theory, models and values to extend practice is certainly a welcome progression and has been taken forward several steps by the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF). PCF has been a work in progress starting with the government-initiated task force in 2009. Although the new practice learning assessment and career structure for social work practice education will provide a central steer within the book, it is important also to be mindful that there are differences across the United Kingdom, with Scotland, Ireland and Wales continuing to assess social work using the National Occupational Standards.
