Journalism and the Philosophy of Truth: Beyond Objectivity and Balance: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Journalism and the Philosophy of Truth: Beyond Objectivity and Balance" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This book bridges a gap between discussions about truth, human understanding, and epistemology in philosophical circles, and debates about objectivity, bias, and truth in journalism. It examines four major philosophical theories in easy to understand terms while maintaining a critical insight which is fundamental to the contemporary study of journalism. The book aims to move forward the discussion of truth in the news media by dissecting commonly used concepts such as bias, objectivity, balance, fairness, in a philosophically-grounded way, drawing on in depth interviews with journalists to explore how journalists talk about truth.

I would first like to thank my PhD supervisors Chris Paterson and Paul A. Taylor, as well as my viva examiners Steve Lax and David Miller, for feedback on earlier versions of the research contained within this book. I hope the work is both empirical enough to exasperate Paul and philosophical enough to make Chris openly question my sanity and I thank both of them for never making me have to choose one aspect over the other.
I would also like to thank the faculty and fellow PhD students at the University of Leeds for support during the early stages of this project, especially Rubn Gonzlez who allegedly read the whole thesis and gave many helpful suggestions.
Martin Conboy was also instrumental in giving support and feedback for the book version of my project, and to him a great gratitude is owed.
Thanks is due to my colleagues at the Graduate School of Language and Communication at the National Institute of Development Administration for giving me the time and the space to further develop my research and to complete this book. The students in my Academic Research Writing classes over the last two years also contributed in their own way by forcing me to reflect more on the writing process and by providing stimulating conversations on academic writing. Without this vital teacherstudent interaction the book would not be the finely polished piece of work you now hold in your hands.
The journalists interviewed for this project are owed a large debt of gratitude. Without their sacrifice of time to meet with me the interviews, of course, could never have been completed. Due to their cooperation I was able to see inside the Guardian offices in the Parliament Building of London, choice bars and cafes in Whitehall, the offices of the Washington Post, NBC News, and C-Span, and three separate Caribou Coffees in Washington DC. To the journalists at the Telegraph, Times, Fox News, PBS, and CNN who were unable to participate in the interviews, do not fret; its not too late. Please get in touch with me and we can meet for a chat at your convenience. Brad Austin was kind enough to host me during my fieldwork in Washington DC and is owed thanks as well.
I would further like to thank the editorial staff at Routledge: Nancy Chen, Natalie Foster, Christina Kowalski, Kathleen Laurentiev, Felisa Salvago-Keyes, and Erica Wetter, as well as the anonymous reviewers.
Another often-forgotten thanks is needed for the philosophers and other academics whose work forms the core of my book. It is only from mixing them up in the imperfect blender of my mind that such a book can be written, and any misinterpretation, over-radicalisation, and/or understatement of their work by me rests on my shoulders alone.
Finally, I would like to thank my family for the support over the years. You all know who you are so I hope I do not have to name names, and you all know what youve done so I hope I do not have to get more specific. Isabella stands out for special attention, however, as I can always rely on her to provide comfort when I get writers block, distraction when my mind becomes foggy, and a soggy dog bone or the chewed-up remnants of a teddy bear in my lap to remind me to take a break from the computer every once and a while.
Lies, Lies, Lies!
But we begin, as always, tonight, Keepin em Honest. And tonight we begin by focusing on the lies that the Egyptian government continues to tell. Now, I know lies is a strong word, its one we rarely use, we talk about d, different facts, but we cant think of another word right now to describe what the Egyptian government has been saying because what they have been saying is the direct opposite of what they have been doing.
