In MaleMale Murder, Dobash and Dobash experienced researchers, award winning authors and long-time collaborators use evidence from their Murder Study to examine 424 men who murdered another man. Using both quantitative and qualitative data drawn from a wider study of 866 homicide casefiles and 200 in-depth interviews with murderers in prison, they focus on Five Types of malemale murder: confrontational/fighters; murder for money/financial gain; murder between men in the family; sexual murder between men; murder of older men. Each type is examined in depth and detail in a separate chapter that begins with a brief overview of relevant research and is followed by a comprehensive examination of the murder event including subtypes that illustrate the diversity within each type of murder. Following the examination of the five types of malemale murder, the focus turns to the lifecourse of the perpetrators including childhood, adulthood, and their time in prison. Lastly, the reflect on the body of findings from the Murder Study, and stress the importance of gender in understanding these lethal events. The Dobashes bring their research skills and insights to the complex task of covering the entire scope of homicide cases in which men murder men. This is an essential text for students, professionals, policy makers, and researchers studying violence, gender, and homicide.

We owe thanks to many unnamed individuals who facilitated our research in the prisons in which we examined casefiles and conducted interviews, to the men and women in prison who agreed to be interviewed, to the prison services in England/Wales and Scotland, and to the staff within each of the separate prisons who allowed access to their records and facilitated our research within the context of the many and varied demands of their daily routines.
To the ESRC, Economic and Social Research Council, for funding the research.
To Kate Cavanagh and Ruth Lewis, co-researchers, who spent countless hours working with us as we developed the data collection instruments, collected data from the casefiles, conducted interviews, and prepared the quantitative and qualitative data for analysis. Their dedication and professional approach was invaluable in the process of conducting a very difficult and demanding piece of research, and their friendship, sense of humor and optimism were equally as valuable.
To Routledge for publishing the book, Charlotte Endersby for commissioning the book, Arunima Aditya, Editorial Assistant, for attention to queries as the manuscript developed, Ravinder Dhindsa for copy editing, Pip Clubbs, Project Manager, and Tom who worked on the design of the cover, and many unnamed others who worked on typesetting, printing and distribution, and Lydia de Cruz who will see it on the other side. A special thanks to everyone as all of the final work was completed during the worldwide response to Covid-19, the coronavirus pandemic that affected us all.
Thank you, and stay safe.
It is nearly impossible to escape the public and media obsession with true crime murder. There appears to be a fascination with serial killers, women killers, psychopaths, and mass murderers, but few homicides actually match this profile. So, what is the reality of homicide? Most murders are committed one-at-a-time. Most are committed by men who kill other men, followed by men who kill women. Women rarely commit murder, and most murderers are not psychopaths. We focus on real life murders, and use 424 cases of malemale murder from a larger study of murder conducted in England/Wales and Scotland that included 866 cases of all types of murder against men, women and children. In examining the 424 cases of malemale murder, we focus on the situations and circumstances at the time of the murders, the murder events, and the life course of the men who committed these murders including childhood, adulthood, and their time in prison.
We begin with a brief discussion of the worldwide prevalence of homicide and some historical patterns. This is followed by a consideration of some contemporary approaches to explaining crime, violence, and homicide which constitute the foundations of the approach taken here. This includes a focus on poverty and inequality, cultures and sub-cultures, the murder event and what men were thinking at the time they committed murder. The Murder Study, from which the 424 cases are drawn, uses a socio-cultural approach with a particular focus on the murder event. We used a mix-method and multi-disciplinary approach, including both quantitative and qualitative evidence from the casefiles of convicted murderers and from 180 interviews with men in prison for murder. Main findings from the Murder Study are presented in five chapters each devoted to a different type of malemale murder: Confrontational Fighters, Money/Financial Gain, Family, Sexual Murders, and Murders of Older.Men. The last chapters focus on the life course of the men who commit murder including their childhood, adulthood, and life in prison. The final chapter provides a summary of the evidence and consider the problems men will face when and if they leave prison.
