Thomas Acton OBE is a campaigner for the rights of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers. He is also Secretary of the Brentwood Gypsy Support Group and Patron of the Roma Support Group. Thomas lectured at the University of Greenwich for over 30 years, and was Professor of Romani Studies, and is currently Professor Emeritus, Visiting Professor at the Corvinus University, Budapest and Senior Research Fellow at Buckinghamshire New University.
Susan Alexander is a former National Coordinator for Friends, Families and Travellers. Susan is currently administrator for the Travellers Aid Trust, the only independent grant maker dedicated specifically to supporting Gypsies and Travellers in the UK.
Neil Ansell is a trustee of Friends, Families and Travellers. He is a former Big Issue and BBC reporter and is currently a novelist who has authored the acclaimed novels Deep Country and, most recently. Deer Island.
Sarah Cemlyn holds Fellowships at Bristol University and Corvinus University, Budapest, having lectured in social work and social policy for 20 years, and worked previously as a social/community work practitioner. Her research addresses equality, human rights and anti-discriminatory practice in social welfare and social policy, with a particular focus on issues affecting Gypsies, Roma and Travellers.
Gary Craig is Professor of Community Development and Social Justice at Durham University. Gary was the worlds first Professor in Social Justice when he was appointed at the University of Hull in 2000. He was also founding Fellow at the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation and led the team working on issues of modern slavery.
John Day was a co-founder of the East Anglia Gypsy Council and former Chair of the Gypsy Council and is from the English Gypsy community. Peter was one of the first Gypsies to work in a local authority Traveller Education Service. Before his retirement John was a community development worker for the Black and Minority Ethnic Network for the East of England Region (MENTER).
Notes on contributors
Margaret Greenfields initially trained as a lawyer, with a special interest in family law and housing issues. She fairly rapidly moved into legal policy and has worked in the fields of child protection, domestic violence, looked-after children living in kinship care placements and the health, education and social care needs of Gypsy Travellers. Margaret is a Professor in the School of Social Sciences, Primary Care and Education at Buckinghamshire New University. A key research interest is Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
Sylvia Ingmire is Chief Executive of the Roma Support Group and was a founding member in 1998. The Roma Support Group is one of the most established and well-known Roma organisations in the UK and is widely recognised for its pioneering work
Arthur Ivatts OBE is an International Consultant to governments and international organisations, including the EU, UNESCO, UNICEF, Council of Europe, FRA and the Roma Education Fund. Prior to this he was a senior consultant to the Department for Children, Families and Schools (DCFS) and is a former HM Inspector for Traveller Education.
Angus McCabe is Senior Research Fellow with the Third Sector Research Centre, University of Birmingham, where he co-leads TSRCs below-the-radar research, exploring the experiences of small community-based organisations, black, minority ethnic and refugee/migrant groups. Angus has a background in community development work, both in the inner city and in settings on peripheral estates.
Yvonne MacNamara is Chief Executive Officer of the Traveller Movement (TM), a national second-tier community development charity working to raise the capacity and social inclusion of Traveller and Gypsy communities in Britain. Yvonne was a founding member of the TM (then named the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain) and prior to joining TM worked for Irish Travellers through the Brent Irish Advisory Service.
Sarah Mann is Training and Capacity Building Manager at Friends Families and Travellers (FFT), a Brighton-based national organisation that supports Gypsies, Roma and Travellers. Sarah joined FFT in 2007. Her background is in community and environmental work, managing projects and training in the public and voluntary sectors.
Peter Mercer MBE is an English Gypsy and a co-founder of the East Anglia Gypsy Council and former Chair and President of the Gypsy Council for Education, Culture, Welfare and Civil Rights. He is currently chair for the National Federation of Gypsy Liaison Groups. Aside from helping Gypsies and Travellers in the UK Peter has been active on a European level through the International Romani Union.
