Sonia Maria Figueiredo Almeida holds a doctoral degree in Social Work (2010) from the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos and Research Associate in NEPEVI. Studies and Research Group on Violence from the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. She has experience in Social Work, acting mainly on the following topics: Social Welfare Policy, public policy, domestic and family violence in relation to the child/adolescent, the woman and the elderly, violence in schools, family and training.
Wilson A. Alvarado is the Director of Equipo Nahual, one of the few NGOs dedicated to community outreach with high risk youth and youth actively involved in gangs in El Salvador and Guatemala. He holds a Bachelor degree in Psychology and a Master degree in Sports Psychology from Universidad Nacional de El Salvador. He has been doing outreach with local gang-involved youth for more than 10 years. His approach to youth violence is based on harm reduction and human rights perspectives.
Angie Ash is Principal of the UK-based research consultancy Angela Ash Associates: Research at the universities of Bristol, Bangor and Swansea in the UK, social work practice, charity sector management, and management consultancy to government, charities and companies. Her work has included policy design and development, particularly in the protection of adults at risk from abuse; independent research (mainly in health and social care); the design and delivery of learning and development programmes to staff and volunteers in health, social services and criminal justice agencies. She is past winner of the Jo Campling Memorial Prize presented by the journal Ethics & Social Welfare. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and national representative (Wales) for the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA).
Damon Barrett is Co-founder and Director of the International Centre on Human Rights and Drug Policy (HR-DP), based at the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex, where he is a Visiting Fellow. He is currently Deputy Director at Harm Reduction International. He is a member of faculty for the summer school on human rights and drug policy at the Central European University in Budapest and has lectured in universities around the world. He is an editor-in-chief of Human Rights and Drugs (the official journal of HR-DP), and the author of A Commentary on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: Article 33, Protection from Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Brill/Martinus Nijhoff, 2011).
Cindy Blackstock is Executive Director of the Caring Society and Associate Professor at the University of Alberta. She is a member of the Gitksan Nation. She has worked in the field of child and family services for over 20 years. An author of over 50 publications, her key interests include exploring, and addressing the causes of disadvantage for Aboriginal children and families by promoting equitable and culturally based interventions. Current professional interests include holding fellowships with the Ashoka Foundation and the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
Before joining Stockholms Stadsmission in Stockholm, Martin Broby worked with troubled teenagers as an outreach worker and also within social services. Before becoming a social worker he completed a Bachelor in Business Management and Marketing. He started volunteering time to work with youth at risk and homeless people. He took his undergraduate degree in social work in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 and started his own student based charity group that raised money for various charities and organised volunteer groups in and around Melbourne a group that is still running today.
Iris Chi is the Chinese-American Golden Age Association/Frances Wu Chair for the Chinese Elderly since 2004 at the School of Social Work, University of Southern California (USC). Prior to joining the USC, she taught at the University of Hong Kong, in addition to chairing the Department of Social Work and its postgraduate research programs and serving as the director of the Sau Po Center on Aging. She has participated in numerous studies and published more than 250 articles. She is an honorary Professor, Fellow, consultant and advisor to more than 30 local and overseas social work and aging-related organisations. She is also an associate editor for
