About the author
For over thirty years, Susanne Jaspars has researched the social and political dynamics of food security, livelihoods and nutrition in situations of conflict, famine and humanitarian crises. Susanne first worked in Darfur, Sudan, from 1989 to 1990 when she managed Oxfams nutritional surveillance programme. She continued her engagement with Sudan throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including in Darfur for Oxfam, the World Food Programme and as a Research Fellow at the Overseas Development Institutes Humanitarian Policy Group. Susanne also has extensive experience in other parts of the Horn and East Africa, and has published a number of books, academic articles and policy reports. She recently completed a PhD at Bristol University, examining the history and politics of food aid in Sudan, on which this book is based. Susanne is currently a Research Associate at the Food Studies Centre in SOAS, University of London and at the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies of the University of Bristol. She is on the editorial board of Disasters journal and on the board of the International Humanitarian Studies Association .
