Focusing on the interplay between domestic-level changes and region-wide - photo 1
Focusing on the interplay between domestic-level changes and region-wide interaction, this book is the first comprehensive analytical and theoretical survey of Iranian foreign relations in the Middle East since Antiquity until the Islamic Republic.
Applying a range of internal and external variables and indicators to understanding Irans foreign policy, the author reflects on how these factors have shaped and transformed her regional relations during ancient, medieval, modern and post-revolutionary Iran.
Written in an insightful manner, this book provides an unparalleled analysis of Iranian foreign relations in the Middle East for nearly 47 centuries. Casting a new light on the workings of a politically and strategically important part of the international system, this work is of considerable significance to students and scholars of Middle East Politics and International Relations as well as the general readers whose readings are never far from this unique country in an important region.
It is a pleasure to acknowledge the assistance I have received from others during my time as a postdoctoral fellow and visiting professor at the University of Toronto, Canada, together with the State University of New York, the United States of America, in 2017 and 2018. My greatest debt is to the many scholars of the Middle East whose noteworthy works have guided and informed me throughout the preparation of this book. I hope I have properly recognized my debt in the notes and the bibliography.
I would like to express my thankfulness to Anoush Ehteshami, Professor of International Relations at Durham University. Thanks also to publisher Routledge and editor Peter Sowden. A sincere thank you to Nancy in New Jersey, the USA, for her diligent proofreading of this book. I am also grateful to the University of Tehran, my colleagues and my family for their support, especially my wife, Mahdieh, and my children, Zeinab and Taha.

An obligatory word about transliteration and dates. The Tenth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names was held at United Nations Headquarters from July 31 to August 10, 2012, in accordance with Economic and Social Council decision 2008/241, 2011/251 and 2012/209.
The current UN recommended system was approved in 2012 (X/8), based on the system called broad transcription, as the new Persian Romanization System. The existing system is being fulfilled in the Islamic Republic of Iran and is used in the national geographical names database. As such, this book takes advantage of this system and version of transliteration and attempts to follow the current Persian pronunciation as closely as possible. In other words, the author has transcribed Iranian words and terms as an educated Persian speaker now pronounces them.
To cite an example, in todays Persian, the vowels e and o represent sounds similar to those in the English language. For this reason, they have been substituted for the Arabicized i and u in the transliteration system of the International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies; thus, Mohammad and not Muhammad, mojtahed and not mujtahid as well as Bagh-e Shh and not Bagh-i Shh. In some other examples, the Persian pronunciation of well-known names and place-names are preferred; hence Azarbaijan and not Azerbaijan or Adharbaijan. Nevertheless, if names of places, well-known personalities and technical terms have attained a universal currency, they are preferred over literal transliteration, like Ghaznavid, Afshrid or Treaty of Kurden. Moreover, just the letter
