The papers published in this book were presented to a scientific workshop co-organized in May 1985, in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), by the Arab Study and Research Center of Louvain University and Yarmouk University of Jordan.
More than 15 economic experts from Jordan and European countries took part in the workshop, which was also honoured by the active participation of Dr Albert Boutros, personal representative of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hassan, and Dr Abdessalam al-Majali, President of Jordan University.
We wish here to express our gratitude to all the colleagues who helped us to carry out this project. But our warmest appreciation must be extended to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hassan, whose videotaped address to the workshop has been unanimously praised for its clarity and precision. This special attention shows once again the importance attached by Crown Prince Hassan to a scientific approach to Jordans present situation and future options.
We are also grateful to His Excellency, Mr Abu Nimeh, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Jordan in Belgium, for having provided his support in the preparation of the meeting.
Finally, we would like to thank Mrs Denise Mabardi for her skilful and untiring typing assistance.

It gives me great pleasure to open this workshop on the Economic Development of Jordan: Present Situation and Prospects for the Future, which has finally materialized after more than one postponement, for which I personally apologize. Perhaps this proves that the mechanism for Euro-Arab co-operation could benefit from an additional dose of appropriate technology and better scheduling! I am gratified that the University of Louvain has pursued the objective of holding this workshop with a measure of forbearance and a great deal of patience and goodwill. I particularly thank Professor Bichara Khader, who has served as an emissary between Yarmouk University and the University of Louvain as well as a faithful bridge between the cultures of Europe and the Arab world. I look forward to reading the published proceedings of the workshop and promise to facilitate in any way I can the implementation of proposals arising from the discussions.
