This book was written over a period of six years, in three different academic contexts. First of all, I would like to thank the Graduate School of Social Sciences at the University of Bremen. Its staff and especially Prof. Steffen Mau and Werner Dressel never failed to offer me an open ear and sympathetic attitude.
