Preface
In approaching the task of writing this book, I have set out to write a practical guide rather than an academic treatise. Drawing on both my consulting and public speaking experience, I therefore wrote from the standpoint of a business person who has been 'through the hoops'. Within the text is the information I wish I had known when first I set out to do business in Taiwan.
Believing the adage that 'a picture is worth a thousand words' I have included many charts and diagrams as well as tables for those who like to see actual numbers. In this manner I have tried to balance the often conflicting requirements of breadth and depth.
A further problem with any printed book of this nature is the timeliness of the information within its pages. This is especially true given the rambunctious pace of Asia in 1998. I have approached this problem from two standpoints. Firstly, during the first quarter of 1998 I set out to completely revise the text to bring it up to date with current developments. Most of the tables and charts therefore provide information to the end of 1997 at least. Secondly, I have taken advantage of the new multimedia opportunities to establish an Internet website for this Guide. This site is located at http://virtualtaiwan.com.
Readers who have access to the Internet and who require the most up-todate information available are invited to complete and return the enclosed Reader Reply Coupon at the end of the book and send it to me. By return email you will receive your password allowing you to access the restricted
