PREFACE
Although less pronounced since 1954, the forces of racial separatism, gender discrimination, and oppressive dominance have been formidable obstacles against the occupational aspirations of African Americans on the North American continent. Inequalities in access to health care and in the development of professionals in the health services have represented selected effects of these forces.1 Among the many expressions of these constraints were attempts by some whites to obstruct access by African Americans to medical education and their subsequent practice and mobility within the profession.
Against the background of the history of oppressive dominance in relation to blacks, this study develops insights into successful efforts by a number of determined individuals, small groups of black Americans and philanthropists to establish blacks in the profession of medicine. These streams of successes began with Robert McCune Smith who was awarded the M.D. by the University of Glasgow in 1837. Twenty-seven years later, Rebecca Lee, M.D. (1864), the first black American woman in medicine graduated from the New England Female Medical College.
