Diversity and Community in the Academy: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Diversity and Community in the Academy" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

In the wake of court rulings that have forced university administrators to reevaluate affirmative action policies, this balanced, thoughtful book examines three typical defenses of those policies: that affirmative action compensates for past discrimination; that it provides role models and ensures diversity; and that it corrects for systemic bias against women and racial minorities. Wolf-Devine finds that none of these arguments justifies adopting affirmative action across the board, and she argues, contrary to most opponents of the policy, that some circumstances make affirmative action appropriate. Analyzing the cultural, economic, and political contexts in which affirmative action has been debated, she suggests ways to get around the current impasse over the issue without abandoning a commitment to social justice. The depth and balance of the book are enhanced by an appendix containing articles by noted legal expert George Rutherglen, distinguished philosopher James Rachels, and independent scholar Richard Rodriguez.

Issues in Academic Ethics
Academic life generates a variety of moral issues. These may be faced by students, staff, administrators, or trustees, but most often the issues revolve around the rights and responsibilities of the faculty. In my book Saints and Scamps: Ethics in Academia (Rowman & Littlefield, revised edition, 1994), I set out to enumerate, explain, and emphasize the most fundamental of these professorial obligations. To do justice to the complexities of academic ethics, however, requires the work of many scholars focused on numerous areas of investigation. The results of such an effort are embodied in this series.
Each volume concentrates on one set of connected issues and combines a single-authored monograph with sources chosen by the author to exemplify or amplify materials in the text. This format is intended to guide readers while encouraging them to develop and defend their own beliefs.
In recent years philosophers have examined the appropriate standards of conduct for physicians, nurses, lawyers, journalists, business managers, and government policymakers but have not given equal attention to formulating guidelines for their own profession. The time has come to observe the Delphic motto "Know thyself." Granted, the issues in need of critical examination are not exotic, but as the history of philosophy demonstrates, self-knowledge is important to seek and difficult to attain.
