ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
It's a Disaster began as a concept for a college course at Illinois Wesleyan University about catastrophes and the insurance market. From those first discussions in 1995 came the realization that there is no compendium of information on disasters and disaster-related insurance coverages. This book is designed to fill that gap for both the general interest market and the college course market.
I want to thank the staff at Silver Lake Publishing, without whose efforts I could not have completed this book. In particular, I want to acknowledge the efforts of Christina Blackett Schlank, Megan Thorpe and Jamie MacKinnon Walsh. Thanks also go out to Dan Carrigan, Catastrophe Consultant at State Farm for his help.
Editor and Publisher Jim Walsh deserves special credit for his willingness to take a chance on the book's concept. His wisdom and work are apparent throughout this work as well as many of my other projects. I am especially grateful for his perseverance and, more important, his friendship.
Finally, I would like to dedicate this work to my maternal ancestors, the Treadways and the Popes. I am so proud of all that they have accomplished and I hope that my achievements make them proud as well.
