"You are well named, Nabalyou fool!" she exclaimed.
As soon as she said it, Abigail knew her husband would punish her. What happened was more sudden and vicious than she expected.
His fist lashed out at her face, striking her with all the drunken fury at his command. Jagged colors flashed before her eyes. The world spun around her. Then she opened her eyes and stared at the gray skies; she was flat on her back in the dust of the courtyard.
Her husband stood over her for a moment, swaying, probably wondering whether to continue beating her. Finally he shrugged, turned, and lurched over to the table, where he poured himself a cup of wine. He swilled it noisily, slopping some of it down his beard.
Abigail lay unmoving, not wanting to arouse his anger again. She felt no pain, although she was aware of a trickle of blood from her mouth. Nor did she feel fear. She had never been afraid of her husband.
They had been married two years; only once before had he beaten her. That was just a few days after their wedding. She had called him "Nabal" then, too. The name infuriated him, and he had struck her. She had never called him that sinceuntil now.
Everybody called him Nabalbehind his back. To his

face they called him Kenaz ben Elah, a Calebite of the tribe of Judah. His grandfather, in fact, had been Caleb ben Jephunneh, the patriarch of Judah and companion of Joshua. But everyoneservants, nobles, tradesmenknew him simply as Nabal, the Fool.
Abigail explored with her tongue the tiny cut on her lip where the blow had broken the skin against a tooth. Nothing serious. Not even painful. Maybe it looked worse than it was, which might explain why her husband had not continued the beating. The flagon of wine on the table was more attractive to him than beating his prostrate wife.
She continued to lie in the dust, watching him. He seemed to seek any excuse these days to drink heavily. Today it was the sheep shearing. "A festival," he called it. Anything for an excuse to swill his wine.
Then she gasped, as she recalled what had prompted her to call him Nabal. He had just bragged to her that he had sent the emissaries of the outlaw David away empty handed. He certainly was a fool. His rash actions would mean a raid by the savage outlaws and a brutal death for everyone.
The renegade David ben Jesse had made quite a reputation for himself among the landowners of Israel. Wherever he went, he raided. First he would send a representative to the landowner demanding tribute. A lot of tribute. Whole flocks, many donkeys, food, even servants. The intelligent landowners would pay up; the stupid ones refusedand suffered.
Kenaz was now draining his third cup. He had been drinking heavily all day, and certainly he should have reached his capacity by now. He hiccuped, belched loudly, and staggered off toward the largest building of his estate, where his sleeping quarters were located.
