Two Halves of a Broken Heart

Chapter One

The excruciating pain that pierced through her body jolted her into awareness. Her eyes popped open from her deep slumber. She clutched at her stomach. Dread creeped into her heart before crashing into her soul. Charm Bradley had felt this pain before. Three times. To be exact. Her body began to tremble as she slowly sat up. The pain made her grimace but she pushed through and sat up completely. Tears welled in her eyes as she reached for the lamp next to the bed. The bedroom was washed in the soft light from the lamp. Fear clutched at her and she didnt want to look but she didnt have a choice. Slowly looking down, she let out a suffocated squeal. Blood coated her thighs and spots of blood clots were on the bed between her legs.

Not again, She breathed. Please not again. Her shoulders shook as she began to cry silently. Reaching for her cell phone, she wiped her runny nose. The bed was empty next to her and it was past 7 in the evening. Shed decided to take a nap in the first place because she felt feverish. She expected that her husband would have been home by now, but their house was completely quiet. Pressing the dial button on her cell she called her husband. It rang ten whole times before finally going to voicemail. Knowing she couldnt wait on her husband to finally call her back she hung up and called an ambulance. Maybe there was a chance she could save the pregnancy. Losing another baby, she didnt know what to do now. Her body was physically drained, and she was mentally and emotionally suffocated.

Clenching her teeth through the pain she called an ambulance. She couldnt even say the words she needed to say so the EMTs would understand what she needed. Her mind couldnt transport the words to her mouth to formulate complete sentences. But they didnt need to hear more. They were sending her help. Ending that call, Charm tried calling her husband again. It rang out before going to voicemail. This time she left a message.

Hey Terrell, its me. Somethingsomething happened. Im going to the hospital. I really-really need you. She left it at that and just ended the call. So there she lay in a pool of her own blood waiting for the ambulance to come.

********

Im sorry Charm, The doctor said entering her room. You are miscarrying. Charm sat there stoically. Tears painted her face but that was the only thing that suggested she had emotions. She didnt talk or even look at the doctor. She should have known this would happen again. After the last three times why should this one be any different?

When can I go home? Charm asked finally. The doctor was silent for a moment forcing Charm to look at her.

Whats the problem? Charm asked. After a miscarriage she got a checkup, some medicine then she was free to go. She did not want to stay here longer than necessary, wallowing in the fact that the baby her husband wanted so badly was gone. Again.

Charm you havent passed the baby completely. Seen as you were about 4 months along we have to dilate your cervix and remove the rest of the baby from your uterus. Charm just stared at her. She began to shake her head.

This is difficult for you Charm. I can get that and I emphasize. But the baby has to be completely removed so you can remain healthy and go back to trying to have another baby.

So what happens? Charm asked. In all her miscarriages, this has never happened to her.

I can either give you some pills to make your body expel the baby, or I can go in surgically. Even though the baby is small, the pills will make you feel like youre giving birth Charm. Surgically I can put you under then clean out your uterus and that would be it. Charm sunk down into the bed. She didnt know what to do. But feeling like she was giving birth when she truly wasnt would break her completely.

Put me under, She whispered.

Charm is there anyone we can call for you? You shouldnt be going through this alone. Charm looked at the doctor.

Youre right. I shouldnt. Charm didnt know what was worse. Having to go under to have her baby removed from her uterus, or the fact that she had to do it alone since her husband was missing.

I just want to get this over with, Charm said. So I can go home. The doctor grimaced and nodded.

Soon Charm was given a drug that put her to sleep immediately. Then as if only 15 minutes had passed, she woke up again staring at the ceiling. Her body was racked with pain and she could barely move. The doctor came into view.

I know youre in pain, She said softly. I put some painkiller in the IV. You should start feeling it soon.

Cant I just have some medicine to take home? I want to go home. The doctor clasped her hands in front of her.

Unfortunately Charm I want to keep you overnight. Tomorrow morning you can go home with medicine but tonight I want you here under watchful eyes so your body can start healing.

What? You think Im gonna hurt myself? Charm asked hotly. The doctor didnt respond, but she rubbed Charms arm.

Get some sleep honey.

I want to see my baby, Charm said suddenly. She could tell the doctor didnt think it was a good idea but she didnt say so.

Show me, Charm demanded. I want to see. The doctor left the room and came back ten minutes later with a kidney basin. Charm fought through her pain to sit up. But she crumbled back down immediately when she saw the fetus in clumps and bloody in the small basin. She fell onto her back and just wept silently. Even when she closed her eyes she would never be able to forget what her fetus looked like outside her body. But it wasnt like she was ever going to be able to see what a normal baby looked like. She was a woman that was denied the basic natural function of a womans body. Charm turned over, hiding her face from the doctor as her silent tears soaked the pillow beneath her head.

Chapter Two

Terrell Robinson finally cut his phone back on. He was finished with his last clients for the day and he was exhausted. After his wife called him three times that day, he didnt want to be bothered anymore so he cut his phone off. He loved Charm to death. She was practically heaven on earth. His fellow coworkers envied him for being able to have a beautiful woman like her. She waited hand and foot on him, and she was seemingly the perfect wife. But then no one was ever perfect were they? They were married for five years and for three of those years she couldnt get pregnant, and when she finally did, they always lost the pregnancy. So much for being the perfect wife. He wasnt falling out of love with her no, but he wanted a family. And if he couldnt have that with her, it did put a little strain on their relationship.
