Lecture 1
The word redemption should not be associated with the Christian dogma and theology, where it is a concept with so many connotations. In fairytales, redemption refers specifically to a condition where someone has been cursed or bewitched and through certain happenings or events in the story is redeemed. This is a very different condition from that in the Christian idea.
The type of curse can vary. A being in a myth or fairy-tale is generally condemned to assume an animal form or to be an ugly old woman or man who, through the process of redemption, turns into a prince or princess again. There are certain types of cold and warm-blooded animals, frequently the bear, the wolf or lion, or birds the duck, the raven, dove or swan, or owl or it may be a snake. In other cases someone is cursed and thereby forced to do evil and be destructive, without desiring to act in this manner. For instance, a princess has to kill all her lovers, but in the end, when redeemed, she will say that the curse forced her into such behaviour, but that is now over. These are the main types of evil fate which befall a person in a fairytale and from which he or she is redeemed.
I have chosen not to lecture on a particular fairytale, but to discuss motifs from various tales showing the different types of curses, because I think they have an important psychological meaning, as well as often being the main theme. A human being in a neurotic state might very well be compared to a bewitched person, for people caught in a neurosis are apt to behave in a manner uncongenial and destructive towards themselves as well as others. They are forced onto too low a level
