Poorman brings together ethics and pastoral practice in an interactional model that captures the distinctive character of Christian pastoral counseling. His work is especially important in a culture that often confuses pastoral counseling with therapy. It also challenges traditional notions which portray the pastoral minister as an instructor who dispenses the churchs moral teaching. Poorman distinguishes the pastoral task from that of therapist or teacher, while drawing on the best resources of contemporary psychology and moral development theories. He brings moral theology into lively conversation with pastoral experience; at the same time, his clear presentation brings a critical method of moral discernment to Christian ministry which is rooted in faith and the wisdom of the community.

Preface
For many of us in Catholic pastoral ministry, assisting others to discern what is truly moral is an art which often eludes systematic description. While we can all agree that good moral discernment requires comprehensive consideration of the issues at stake, we sometimes are at a loss when we try to describe a workable, practical method for such discernment. Nevertheless, those charged with the here-and-now pastoral life of the church must routinely uncover and carefully explore the dimensions of complex moral issues in everyday settings such as hospital chaplaincy, campus ministry, education, and parish life. What constitutes a sound moral discernment process for these issues? How can ministers begin to test the adequacy of their own methods of assisting with moral discernment? What basic, fundamental shape should these pastoral conversations about moral matters take? We must explicate those questions and we must answer them most sensitively, especially in a post-conciliar Catholic church that cherishes the "sanctuary" of the individual conscience and in which simple deference to magisterial authority on moral matters is increasingly called into question.
By using a cross-disciplinary study of the moral psychology of Norma Haan, the philosophy of John Macmurray, and the theological ethics of James Gustafson as backdrop and starting point, I propose a foundation and a method for pastoral moral discernment based on these interactional theories. By studying the moral character of the pastoral conversation itself, I hope to cast new light on the qualities of good discernment as it is co-constructed by the minister and

the one seeking help in such diverse areas of concern as bioethics, sexuality, and justice in the workplace. Following my proposal of an interactional foundation for discernment which is historical, multi-dimensional, communal, creative, and centered on Christ, I offer an overview of the practical pastoral implications of such a foundation. My work is mainly aimed at moral theologians, but I do believe that pastoral ministers and those in training for pastoral ministry may also find it useful in their efforts to describe the dynamics of moral discernment from both theoretical and practical standpoints.
My thanks to the many perceptive colleagues and students who have assisted with the book, as well as to the many others who, as practitioners of the art of seeing and knowing what is right and good, minister tirelessly to those seeking help. These, my brothers and sisters in Christ, have taught me much.
