How can a respected scientist believe in the resurrection? Can I trust the Bibles account that Jesus actually rose from the dead?If the resurrection really occurred, of what importance is it to you and me?Our ready embrace of the authority of science has left many doubting that Jesuss resurrection was a verifiable, historical event. Yet Thomas Miller, an experienced scientist and well-respected surgeon, challenges the notion that modern medicine has disproved the possibility of the resurrection.Through careful investigation of the evidence and evaluation of its reliability, Dr. Miller demonstrates that science and religion are not incompatible and makes a compelling case for the reality of the resurrection.

Dr. Miller has powerfully and uniquely described the resurrection of Jesus Christ, making it intellectually tenable to the scientific mind.

C ARL E. H AISCH , Professor of Surgery, Director of Surgical Education,
Associate Dean for Faculty Development, East Carolina University

While many books have been written about the resurrection of Jesus Christ, both pro and con, this work is one-of-a-kind. Most references cite evidence using both medical and scientific expertise. As an accomplished practicing surgeon and research scientist, Miller has approached this book methodically and comprehensively after devoting many years of study. This is an outstanding resource for anyone questioning the authenticity of the resurrection, or for those seeking to better understand the foundation of the Christian faith.

J EANNIE F ALWELL S AVAS , Associate Professor of Surgery,
Virginia Commonwealth University; Chief of Surgery,
McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Miller has applied his knowledge of anatomy and physiology to bring the unspeakable reality of the crucifixion and death of Christ to our awareness as a prelude to applying the principles of scientific inquiry to a sound defense of the physical resurrection of Christ. The resurrection is pivotal to Millers comprehensible, reflective, and personal apologetics of forgiveness, redemption, and restoration. Those seeking truth will be clearly directed to the Way. The wealth of physical and scriptural support for the crucified and resurrected Christ will reaffirm the believers convictions.

G ORDON L. K AUFFMAN , Jr., MD, Steven and Sharon Baron
Professor of Surgery, Professor of Physiology, Humanities and Medicine,
The Penn State University College of Medicine

It is a distinct pleasure for me to highly endorse this book. I worked with Dr. Miller for many years when he was Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School. His educational credentials strongly validate him as an excellent clinical surgeon and as an outstanding researcher in the basic science of medicine. Dr. Miller is uniquely qualified as a scientist to write about the resurrection of Jesus because he is thoroughly familiar with the scientific method, which he uses throughout his book. All scientific analyses are documented and footnoted, and resources for additional investigation are given. As an academic researcher, his conclusions are stated carefully and accurately based on the data. This book is a must read for those who are searching for truth and a logical, unbiased evaluation of the facts concerning the physical resurrection of Jesus.

CONTENTS

In writing any book, many people are involved along the way, assisting in its development and ultimate completion. A special thanks goes to Doris Farquhar, a friend and professional colleague, whom I have known for more than thirty years. An expert typist and computer person, she helped get each chapter formatted so that it met publication specifications. This was no small feat, since my type A personality was constantly asking her to redo things to get them perfect. Much gratitude, Doris, for what you did to make this book a reality. My thanks as well to my colleague and fellow surgeon Dr. Jeannie Savas, who reviewed the statistics in chapter 5 and offered comments to make it more compelling. Her mathematical and statistical background proved invaluable in helping me make my case. My appreciation, Jeannie, for your assistance and friendship.

Bringing this book to publication was a new kind of venture for me. All my previous publications were in the scientific arena, where I knew the players well and could pick up the phone and discuss ideas with them. Publishing in the Christian world was new to me and clearly uncharted territory. God was gracious, however, and enabled me to meet Dr. Robert Peterson, professor of systematic theology at Covenant Seminary in St. Louis, when he presented a weekend conference at our church. Almost immediately we hit it off, and he showed a genuine interest in this project. Over the next year we talked on the phone and e-mailed each other many times. This communication helped greatly. Further, it was his doing that put me in touch with Crossway. Thank you, Robert, for this ministry of grace.

What an exciting day it was when I received an e-mail from Allan Fisher at Crossway, telling me that my proposal was positively received and that Crossway wanted to work with me. I am deeply grateful, Crossway, for giving me this opportunity. My special thanks to Jill Carter, who has been my editorial contact at Crossway, and who has helped in so many ways. You have been such a delight to work with. Appreciation is also offered to Justin Taylor, who worked with me in hammering out an acceptable title for the book. Your patience and kindness did not go unnoticed. Enough cannot be said about Bill Deckard, who was given the monumental task of reading and editing the entire book. You truly are a master at making thoughts smoothly flow and bringing coherence to my arguments. My gratitude for a job well done!

Although all the people just named have been wonderful friends and colleagues, this book would not have been possible without the support of my family. A special thanks to my three children, Laurie, David (and his wife Laurel), and Bill (and his wife Emily), who encouraged me from the beginning. I love you all. An additional note of appreciation to Bill and Emily for the many hours they devoted to initially typing most of the chapters and helping to format them so that they were readable and made sense. My brother-in-law, Bob Walters, went the extra mile in typing the last chapter. Thank you, Bob, for such generosity. Finally, words are not adequate to express the feelings I have for my wife, Janet, and the support she gave while writing this book. Thanks for your love, encouragement, and continual belief in me over these past forty-four years. Marrying you has truly brought much joy and happiness. I love you!
