Why this book - especially since there are many books dealing with the same subject? One answer is that most Christians are concerned with a rationale for supporting Christian missions among international religions and cultures, if they can do so with integrity and with justification for wholehearted respect for the other religions and the cultures informed by them. This book intends to provide just such a rationale, to demonstrate that one can affirm the Christian mission internationally and interculturally without diminishing either the importance of good interreligious relationships or the recognition of the worth of the major religions.

PREFACE
Why this bookespecially since there are many books dealing with the same subject? One answer is that most Christians are concerned with a rationale for supporting Christian missions among international religions and cultures, if they can do so with integrity and with justification for wholehearted respect for the other religions and the cultures informed by them. This book intends to provide just such a rationale, to demonstrate that one can affirm the Christian mission internationally and interculturally without diminishing either the importance of good interreligious relationships or the recognition of the worth of the major religionsthough I am not claiming that there are no other volumes that do so.
In recent years, especially in Christian circles, a new discipline has emerged dealing with how the world religions are meeting each other in new ways and called theology of religions. This new discipline takes the relation of Christianity to the other religions with great seriousness. Many Christian theologians see this issue of interreligious relationships as the most crucial challenge to Christian theology since the danger and opportunity posed by Darwinism in the nineteenth century. The literature being produced is voluminous indeed.
Therefore, it is certainly appropriate to ask why another book on this subject is needed. A reason more fundamental, though perhaps not more significant, than the one given above is simply that this volume is unique. Part One, composed of Chapters One and Two, seeks to lay a foundation for Part Two, in which my own viewpoint is set forth. Chapter One, after discussing several other introductory matters, contributes a critical assessment of the three terms commonly used to express the Christian attitude toward the other religionsexclusivism,

inclusivism and pluralismfinds this terminology wanting, and suggests a new set of categories. In addition, it offers a more comprehensive treatment than usual of the reasons why religious
