A scholarly and authoritative history of the emergence and growth of Islam in Iran during the early and later medieval periods. This book, by I.P. Petrushevsky, the foremost Soviet Iranologist, was originally published in Russia in 1966. After discussing the Arabian environment in which the faith of Islam arose, and the characterlegal, social and doctrinalof the new message, the author moves on to trace the peculiarly Iranian development of Islamic beliefs, the schisms which arose in its early history, and the eventual creation of a Sunni orthodoxy. Written from the Russian perspective, with Russias long contact with Iranian and Turkish Muslim neighbors, it provides a stimulating and salutary balance to the study of the Islamic world.

Preface
Ilya Pavlovich Petrushevsky (1898-1977) was born in Kiev and spent most of his early academic career in the Azerbaijan SSR, in country which, throughout most of its recorded history, has formed part of the Islamic world, and where the majority of the population speaks a Turkish language. His first major publication was concerned with the troubled history of one of the peoples of Daghestan in the Caucasus. This was followed by studies of the colonial policy of Imperial Russia in the region and of the history of feudal society there and in Armenia. After 1936 he worked in Leningrad in the historical and oriental institutes and was for twenty years Professor of the History of the Near East at the University. What was probably his most important original research was incorporated in a survey of agriculture and agrarian conditions in Iran in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, published in 1960. It has not been translated into any West European language, but its conclusions are summarised in a chapter on socio-economic conditions in Iran under the Mongol dynasty of the Il-Khans which Petrushevsky contributed to volume v of the Cambridge History, of Iran (1968).
The book now so ably translated by Hubert Evans was published in 1966 as Islam v Irane. Kurs lektsii (Islam in Iran: A course of lectures). The title does not do justice to its scope. It is an introduction, at once concise and comprehensive, to those aspects of Islam, legal, social and doctrinal, which are relevant to the history of Iran, many of which are of course equally relevant to the history of other Muslim countries, so that any student of classical Islamic society will find it valuable. In particular it embodies the results of prolonged and profound research into the relation between religious dissidence and social discontent in mediaeval Islam, and into the character and fortunes of some of the resulting rebellions.
