Preface
It is with much regret that I must undertake alone to write the preface to a book which sprang from a warm-hearted academic collaboration between two friends. My fellow author, Morton Bloomfield, died on April 14, 1987, shortly before our book had reached the publisher. Here I must trust that I am speaking on behalf of both of us.
As colleagues in medieval studies at Harvard, Morton and I decided some years ago to join forces in presenting a series of seminars devoted to some specific problems connected with the interpretation of early poetry. We were using the word 'poetry' in the broadest possible sense, and we were not immediately concerned with the philological problems that once faced medievalists and are now being solved by the advancing skills of linguists and lexicographers.
