Richard Cumberland is one of the seventeenth centurys most interesting political theorists. His masterpiece, the De legibus naturae(1672), has rarely been examined on its own terms, but by tracing the political, religious and intellectual circumstances of the composition of this puzzling work, and showing its importance as a critique of Thomas Hobbes, author of the Leviathan, Dr Parkin demonstrates how Cumberland created a new political and ethical theory which absorbed and neutralised many of Hobbess insights. He also examines the science of the Royal Society as a basis for Cumberlands natural law theory and its influence on such thinkers as Samuel Pufendorf and John Locke. Overall, the book provides an important new perspective on the interaction of science, religion and politics in Restoration England.

This study began life as a doctoral dissertation at the University of Cambridge. I would like to express my gratitude to the British Academy for providing the initial postgraduate funding for the project. I would also like to thank the Master and Fellows of Selwyn College, Cambridge, for electing me to the research fellowship which enabled me to complete the book. A scholar could not hope to have a more congenial atmosphere in which to live and work.
It is a great pleasure to be able to acknowledge the contribution of so many friends and colleagues. My greatest intellectual debt is to Quentin Skinner, who supervised the original doctoral project. His unflagging enthusiasm and continuing support have been an enormous encouragement. Tim Hochstrasser first suggested that I look at Cumberland, and I have been very fortunate in being able to call upon his help and advice throughout the evolution of the study. Numerous colleagues have commented upon the work at various stages in its development. Mark Goldie, Istvan Hont, John Robertson, Jonathan Scott, David Smith and Richard Tuck all found time to read and comment on various sections of the work. I have also benefited from discussion with Hans Blom, Linda Kirk, Isobel Rivers and David Stack. I hope that the finished product reflects some of the very good advice that I have received over the years. I tried out various sections of the book at seminars in Cambridge, London and Oxford, and would like to thank the participants who helped me to clarify and develop my arguments.
