PREFACE
Begin
The source of all things is in the Tao.
It is a treasure for the good, and a refuge for all in need.
On auspicious occasions, when gifts are sent, rather than sending
horses or jade, send the teachings of the Tao.
LAO TZU
I first became interested in Taoism many years ago when, as a boy, I read amazing tales of legendary Taoist immortals who mastered the five elements and achieved superhuman abilities. These immortals started their lives as ordinary people, but with diligent practice they transformed themselves into magical beings who existed on a higher plane of consciousness. According to Taoist philosophy, the immortals path is available to anyone who wishes to pursue it.
Spurred on by the stories, I dreamed of becoming a Taoist immortal too, and so I set out on a course of study that has continued throughout my life. Along the way, one of the key things Ive learned is that Taoism provides excellent long-term solutions for maintaining optimum health and vitality as well as a powerful way to understand and make the most of reality.
Over the years, I trained with many remarkable Taoist masters both in the United States and Asia. Then, in the mid-1990s, I met Dr. Liu at his Taoist temple in, fittingly enough, Temple City, California. I was immediately struck by his kind, laid-back, and engaging manner and the way he easily breaks into laughter. He has been studying Taoism since he was a boy and is now the fourteenth-generation master of the Taiwanese branch of the Dragon Gate school of Taoism, a complete system for applying traditional Taoist methods to enhance every aspect of a persons life. Its an approach that enables people to pursue a path that is simultaneously metaphysical and pragmatic, something that strongly appealed to me.
The Dragon Gate school of Taoism is a nearly eight-hundred-year-old system of Chinese philosophy, martial arts, meditation, magic, and mysticism. It is a very mysterious tradition, little known in the West, that provides a practical system for creating a magical Taoist realityeven if you live in a bustling modern-day metropolis. It does this by combining all the best elements of Taoism including:
meditation practices to develop your mental capabilities
chi-gung (energy work) and martial arts exercises for health and longevity
sexual yoga and dream yoga that reach deep into Taoisms shamanic roots
philosophy, based on the Yi Jing (I Ching), or Book of Changes, and the five elements, that provides profound insight into the nature of reality
divination methods for developing your intuition
Best of all, the methods are quite simple, so anyone can practice them and reap the benefits, regardless of health or age.
I have been studying with Dr. Liu for many years now and have seen him teach and help hundreds of people. He has mastered all aspects of the Dragon Gate system. Put simply, he is the real deal. The information in this book has been handed down directly through the centuries to Dr. Liu, who has in turn passed them on to me. I have also incorporated other sources of Taoist information that I have learned over the years where I felt it would enhance the text.
In Secrets of Dragon Gate, I have attempted to distill Dragon Gate Taoism into its most usable form, so the average person can take full advantage of this ancient and secretive tradition to attain optimum health, bring abundance into their lives, and find lasting happiness. I chose to write it because I wish I had been able to find a similar book when I started on my path.
I wish you bold flowing as you pursue your own path.
Jonathan Blank
A note on Chinese transliteration used in this book: I have used both traditional Wade-Giles transliteration as well as the more modern pinyin. I did this because I felt that certain words are more commonly recognized in Wade-Giles, such as Tao (Dao) and chi (qi). I apologize if this inconsistency is disturbing to any readers.
