To all students on the spiritual path
and especially to Steven for his inspiration
It wasnt long after the publication of my book Developing Mediumship that I began to get requests from people to run classes on the teachings in the book and give a more in-depth explanation of some of the exercises. It amazed me that people were becoming more interested in the teachings than the messages from the spirit world that I had become known for. I felt that giving people more of the teachings might be difficult, though, because I had done most of the teaching sessions during the course of a day or weekend seminar and I wasnt happy with that format. I knew that the development of mediumship could take many years.
For me, my circle, or development group, had always been important. It had been a part of my life since my early twenties and had been one of the things that had led me to dedicate my life to working as a medium. The development circle is where the medium really gains the energy and drive to work for spirit. Now, living in London away from the people I had spent every Sunday evening with for many years, all of a sudden I was aware of the distance between us. Though I knew we would always have a spiritual connection, I was missing the physical presence of my spiritual family. It had been a couple of years since I had actually been in a home circle and even though my life had been very busy and I had been doing more work than ever before, the lack of sitting regularly with a group of like-minded people had begun to affect me. I felt a sense of disconnection and a lack of the support that a circle can give.
I have felt for many years that when the spirit world needs me to do something, the opportunity will present itself before me. The need I had to be part of a development group again was becoming so persistent that I found it hard to ignore. So I knew it wouldnt be too long before the opportunity turned up.
Furthermore, there has been a purpose to each circle I have been in. I wondered what the purpose of this new circle would be. Somehow I knew it would involve more of the teachings.
If you want to serve spirit, be sure to know who you are serving first.
MASTER CHI
It is strange how when we meet some people, we dont really understand whats happening at the time but somehow know that it has been an important meeting. This type of thing has happened to me many times and as I grow I learn to see what unfolds. This is what it was like one night around this time when I had just finished a demonstration of mediumship in a theatre in Margate, Kent.
I had got to the end of the book signing when two youngish guys approached me, one holding out one of my books to be signed, the other just standing at his side as if waiting for me to speak to him. Once I had signed the book I asked both of them if they had enjoyed the evening and if they were interested in developing mediumship. Neither gave the impression that they needed a message, so it felt natural to enquire as to their interest in the subject.
It turned out that both these young men were already involved in development, but were looking to learn more and find their way into a good circle. It made me smile when I asked their names and heard back Paul and Steven. These are the names of my two sons and the young men were probably about the ages of my two sons at the time as well. Talk about feeling your age!
I found it a little funny that two 20-something men were presenting themselves to me for assistance on their spiritual paths. Its not the normal age range attending a demonstration of mediumship. But I was quite impressed that they were keen to learn, especially as I couldnt imagine my own boys wanting to develop with me. Then I suddenly remembered that I had been in my twenties when I first started on my path.
I guided both Paul and Steven to a friend of mine who, it turned out, lived not too far from them. Paul stayed in that circle, but Steven wanted to develop trance mediumship and felt that it wasnt really for him. He had already visited several circles and attended many one-day workshops and events to help him with what he felt was a natural gift of mediumship, but he hadnt yet found a circle where he felt safe enough to become himself. As he explained:
Even though I had some psychic experiences as a kid, I always thought that my life was as ordinary as those of the friends and family I grew up with in London. As a boy, I did all the things boys normally do, like play football and skip off school with my mates and use our lunch money to chip in for a packet of fags which we all shared down the local park.
As I got older, the local park became the local pub, where I shared stories about girls and football with my mates. I didnt have a clue about anything spiritual back then. Somehow, as you come through your teenage years into early adulthood, the only things that are important are what is happening at the time and you dont think beyond that.
I was working as a painter when I turned 20 and it was about a year later that I began to experience premonitions of future events; it was this that got me interested in the paranormal. At first the episodes were about my own life. For instance I had a premonition that I was going to meet a particular girl and walk home with her and she was going to tell me something personal about a mutual friend called Jay. At that particular moment a flock of pigeons was going to fly over our heads, a bit of brick was going to fall off the wall beside us and a bus was going to go past with Jay on it and she was going to say, Look, theres Jay! However unlikely it might sound, two months later it all happened just as I had predicted.
