Introduction
There are various books and information on the internet about what the Yamas and Niyamas are. What they propose is the following:
Yamas = abstentions, moral guidelines, restraints for proper conduct , donts;
and
Niyamas = ethical observances, positive duties, dos.
Yet lets be honest: nobody cares about the Yamas and Niyamas. Reading about them is often tedious, dense, and impractical.
But this book is different. Its not what you think it will be.
While theres no doubt that the teachings found elsewhere may contain useful explanations on the Yamas and Niyamas, they often parrot each other with the typical superficial ob servances, abstentions, codes of restraint, dos, and donts. Or they excessively emphasize how practicing cel ibacy and faithfully reading archaically translated scriptures are the cornerstones of proper Yoga and spiritual practice.
This is not to say that these things dont have their purposethey do. But we want to go beyond an exposition on ethical or moral concepts. This is especially true considering that learning about the first two limbs of the Yoga Sutras, the Yamas and Niyamas, when they are presented in a distorted, west ernized, or over-theorized manner, which is oftentimes embellished to fit todays self-help chocolate reading cul ture, helps very few genuine seekers advance in their spiritual journey of self-transcendence.
Furthermore, it is in Yoga that we often find some of the most highly sectarian organizations and practitioners. I cant fathom how countless members of yoga-based spiritual or ganizations fight between themselves to gain recognition as the best spiritual organization. But Yoga doesnt need more division, and it must stay faithful to its literal meaning: un ion .
Thats one of the things I intended to accomplish with this book: to expose a deeper and unified framework of understanding concerning the Yamas and Niyamas, as these are often mentioned as the foundations of genuine Yoga.
I dont want to entertain more yogic thought with this book. Yoga is not about taking ownership of your life and directing it toward the fulfillment that you think you seek. This is because what you truly seek, you will not find in life as you currently know it. No job, no amount of success, no romantic relationship, not a single thing in this world will bring you the fulfillment that you really seek. And in authentic yoga, you dont want to take ownership of your lifeyou want to surrender it to the Higher Power: God, pure Consciousness, true Self, whatever name you wish to call it. This subject has never been truly taught from this higher perspective.
You wont find many references or extensive thesis-like commentaries in this work either. Its purpose is not to in tellectually stimulate you, but to prod you into awakening a deeper desire, an intention, and a power to establish the fertile grounds from which you can realize your true nature. Those attached to scholarly interpretations that never lead to enlightenment may find this appalling. This book is not for them.
Most commentaries on the Niyamas and Yamas are extremely scholarly or theoretical with no practicality at all; others are no more than self-development teachings that make no change whatsoever to any seekers genuine spiritual pathperhaps they just slightly help to polish the false self, the ego-mind. How can authentic seekers find anything truly precious in these types of teachings?
When the call to write about the Yamas and Niyamas appeared in my consciousness, it came from out of the blue. I never intended to write about them. Truthfully, it is my direct experience (and what Ive observed in many seek ers) that most of these codes of proper conduct naturally arise in a purified, tranquil, and wise mind. Spiritual practice produces a spiritually mature mind, capable of ac tualizing the Yamas and Niyamas as if they were second nature, which is much better than forcing a seeker to employ these conducts in order to be able to meditate. Paramahansa Yogananda shared this same line of teaching with his disciples. To meditate, we want to relax and let go of noisewe dont need tension and more things filling our minds.
Yet I was compelled to write this book, and after finishing it, I fully understood why. It pushes the understanding of the Yamas and Niyamas further than ever before, expanding their meaning and incorporating a practical aspect onto them rather than merely being a moral and ethical teaching. Well explore them at their very essence, going beyond all superficial and even conventional understandings.
Prepare yourself for an insightful, pragmatic, and spiritually maturing exposition on Yogic Dharma principleslike youve never seen before. Youll experience a total recontex tualization of the Yamas and Niyamas, and rather than ap plying them as the moral and ethical bedrock of Yoga practice, they will be used as tools for Self-Realization.
Now thats what a real twist is, and hopefully, one that will unleash a powerful roar in your heart.
