Chapter 1: Understanding Cancer
Defining Cancer
Cancer remains to be one of the most fearsome killer diseases not only in the US, but also all around the world. It is a collective term used to define that phenomenon in the body in which cells abnormally divide and spread throughout the body to invade other healthy cells, which can cause abnormal function, and eventually death. Today, the US has the 7 th highest cancer rate in the world. In 2013 alone, US reports more than 1.6M new cancer cases, and that number even excludes non-melanoma skin cancers.
Cancer cells used to be normal cells that the body produces. A normal cell would age and die, which gives way to the birth of young, healthy cells. However, DNA materials of cells can be changed, and the normal division and production of cells can be damaged. Normal cells become cancer cells when the DNA material of cells prevents certain cells to die, or if they lead to dividing into new cells, even if the body does not need them. The excess cells produced group together as a mass of tissue, which is called tumor.
Tumor sounds like a scary term, but not all tumors can cause cancer. Benign tumors, for example, are those tissue masses that can be easily removed. Most of the time, once the tumor is removed, no danger is found in the body. They also do not replicate, and the cells found in these masses do not spread to other parts of the body.
Malignant tumors, on the other hand, are the cancerous ones. What happens is that the cells in this tumor invade other tissues, which becomes cancerous as well. The metastasis, or the spread of cancer cells from one tissue to another, is the reason why cancer on one part can spread to others.
What are the Known Types of Cancers?
There are hundreds of cancers known today, but cancer is typically grouped into 5 categories:
1. Sarcomas cancers that grow in the cartilage, fat, bone, muscle, and other similar tissues
2. Lymphomas cancers that grow and attack the immune system and the lymph nodes
3. Leukemias cancers that start out in the bone marrow and would often grow and spread out in the bloodstream
4. Carcinomas cancer cells that cover external and internal body parts, such as the ones found in colon cancer or breast cancer
5. Adenomas cancers that typically form and grow in the adrenal glands, thyroid, and other glands
Are You at Risk?
Cancer survivors would also need to understand why they are suffering from this disease, because it would help them identify what they need to do in order to prevent cancer from coming back when they recover. Factors that would increase the likelihood of having a cancer are normally based on ones lifestyle and general health condition, but there are factors that are also linked to ones genetics and age.
