M Y WIFE AND I LIVE IN A HOME IN VENICE, CA, WHICH IS lovingly dubbed The Appleton Ashram. It is spacious, with a temple-like energy, lots of light, wood floors, and a large garden out back. People visit often. Some will stay for tea or a green juice or a smoothie. Others come to practice meditation or yoga or to partake in a 12-Step meeting. People come and people go. One day, Mastin just came.

There is a very comfortable green couch in our living room, which would become Mastins bed for several months in early 2010. We would have a chance to get to know each other and develop a close friendship during that time. It was a great blessing for both of us.

Mastin made it clear up front that he was in a difficult spot in life, that there was great uncertainty. He had this unusual ability to explain clearly what the issues were and a truly sweet willingness to turn his gaze within. He was in a real crisis, but refused to look away. Mastin had the desire to speak about it and to go through the actual feeling of his suffering. Even more remarkable, however, was the depth of Mastins honesty. Unlike anyone I had known, Mastin had developed a keen ability to tell the truth as he saw it. Frankly, it was disarming. As trust grew between us, he exercised greater and greater license to speak his innermost truths, making himself completely vulnerable. There were a few times that Mastin put voice to some of his shadows and my reaction was to simply laugh, only because one doesnt often get to hear someone be that honest. Of course by doing so, Mastin was inadvertently empowering me to look at and express my own shadows. Such is the power of the book before you.
