We are all at the center of our own narrative, but its a narrative that changes every time we retell it.

RUTH WARE

THERE IS SOMETHING that all of us can learn from our life experiences once we interpret them through the lens of faith. Some lessons are painful, and some are painless, but none of them are pointless. The first chapter of the Book of Genesis is brilliantly written to help us retell our stories so that we can reframe our lives.

The stories we tell ourselves about our past experiences determine our future. According to a recent Forbes article, The single biggest predictor for all these [life] events is not the facts of your situation, but the story you tell. The article went on to explain that there is an epidemic of negative storytelling in our culture that is pervading our personal and interior lives. That sounds grim. But the articles writer adds that the good news is that we have the ability to fix that. And the best news is that its not as hard as you might believe.

Psychologist Kelly McGonigal has observed that small shifts in mindset can trigger a cascade of changes so profound that they test the limits of what seems possible. When you truly believe all things work together for good to them that love God (Rom. 8:28), your perspective will change, and in retrospect you will see God bringing you through the most difficult of timesand you will realize that not one moment of your life is wasted.

What are the words you use to tell your story?

To reset and reclaim your life, you will have to reframe the narrative of your life story so that it mirrors the narrative God originally planned and purposed. If you want to leave behind the baggage that is weighing you down, youll have to learn to tell your story from a different vantage pointthe vantage point of faith. The stories you choose to tell todaywhether woven in faith or fear; resentment, regret, or gratitudeshape the tomorrows of your future. The story God chose to tell in the first chapter of Genesis shaped the world as we know it today. I chose to weave the story of Genesis into the message of this book because it will help you understand how to shape your everyday life. This book is written to help you achieve perspective and gain a greater appreciation for the God who lives inside of you. He is your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Ps. 46:1).

In the first installment of this three-book series, Commanding Your Morning, you learned the importance of watching your words. So many people walk around with their lives on stutter and auto-repeat because they keep telling the same stories about their past over and over again. In the second installment, Hello, Tomorrow!, you learned how forming a vision for your life can help you break negative cycles because your tomorrow does not have to look like your yesterday. In this final installment, Goodbye, Yesterday!, you will learn that all of us have potential for greatnessfor accomplishing great things, establishing amazing relationships, and creating astounding masterpieces of our lives. Potential is Gods gift to you. Maximizing your potential is your gift to Him.
