Preface
The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is one of the most magnificent natural spectacles of this earth. The tributary gullies that seemed insignificant from above become major canyons in their own right, providing myriad obstacles to travel along the layers. As one descends to the inner realms of the canyon, the walls and remnant towers of the sinuous tributaries become towering mountains that guard the river from intruders. The great depth of the canyon is better appreciated when one realizes that one is passing a continuous series of plant and animal habitats that generally range from southern Can-
