Foreword
Community for Life is an engaging, colorful, and personalized account of the bruderhof movement, surpassing in information, tone, and spiritual perception all the previous analytical studies by either insiders or outsiders.
If community life in all its spiritual connotations can be put into words, this account has come the closest. The reader feels included in a wide scope of activity and perceptionsthe odors, heat, scenery, frustrations, the feelings between children and parents, and the reasons for lifelong commitment.
This book is the first to treat the historical backgrounds, the ups and downs of community life, and the difficulties of the past with the support of bruderhof informants.
The bruderhof movement originated in 1920 during a period of social unrest and spiritual searching in Germany. The mere articulation of disillusionment and the rejection of middle-class values was not sufficient for Eberhard Arnold (18831935), a deeply converted Christian man. Eberhard and his wife, Emmy, determined to follow the teaching and commandments of Jesus.
With a few adults and their children the Arnolds began living in community, holding no private property and living in complete faith in Jesus. Others joined them, includ-
