Foreword
How can we achieve peace in our personal lives, our families, our communities, our world? Perhaps no topic leans more heavily on us today than this one, for it touches every area of our lives.
Our answer to it is influenced by a variety of factors. One of the major ones informing our response comes from leaders of the past, especially persons of political and religious stature.
While political and religious leaders today often look to military solutions to conflict, these increase tension rather than reduce it. Violence too often begets only more violence. In this book, author John Driver looks to history for another waya peaceful resolution of conflict. He shows us how in the period from about A.D. 90 until 313, early Christians opposed warfare because of the life and teachings of Jesus. Jesus taught love for enemies, with a goal of bringing them to faith and friendship in God's family, the church. This led early Christians to extend love and forgiveness to persecutors and to call evildoers to a new way of life. However, through the years, Christians slowly became

involved in military life until they lost their peaceful approach to solving conflict. John Driver, biblical scholar, prolific writer, and mission leader, shows us briefly and concisely how this change occurred.
