Foreword
Different systems of thought compete for our attention wherever we live. These ideologies help to organize society for specific purposes. The goals are usually intended to benefit human beings by structuring life in an orderly manner.
Sometimes, however, the people who put these ideologies into practice abuse their power. They lose sight of the goalto benefit the people. The ideology which was originally intended for good then becomes evil.
In When Kingdoms Clash author Calvin Shenk identifies a few of the major ideologies of our time. After briefly explaining them, he shows how the church can learn from these systems of thought. One way is to examine them in light of Scripture. He shows how "faith judges all ideologies."
The kingdom of God begun by Jesus judges all other political, economic, and social systems. "It crowds them out of first place," he says. Christians can therefore work in any situation, regardless of the prevailing ideology.
The author brings to his writing both training in mis-

sions and world religions and teaching experience in the U.S., Ethiopia, Israel, and India. As one who has lived in areas with widely differing ideologies, he is able to draw on his broad experience to illustrate key points. His brief statement on ideologies offers valuable insights for Christians whose first loyalty is to "a kingdom not of this world."
Because of this loyalty, Christians look beyond the borders of their own nation. As the author says, "Christians are, first of all, world citizens." This concern for all people gives us a clearer vision of how to live in our particular place and time.
