To Dan Daniel Ray Wenger joyfully embraced God's call to mission which included serving among suffering people in Nicaragua until December 30, 1989, when, at twenty-three years of age, an auto accident while accompanying youth for a weekend church retreat opened the door of heaven, where Dan joined those multitudes who are cheering us onward in the way of Christ.

Foreword
I must begin this foreword with a confession: I had not planned to write it!
When my longtime friend, Eugene Witmer, wrote asking if I would consider doing a foreword for the forthcoming book on missions by David Shenk, I was honored. But I immediately wrote back that, as much as I would like to do it, time would not permit.
Somehow this word did not reach the publishers, who sent me the proofs anyway. I thought I would just glance at the book. After all, a good friend had introduced it, and I have always respected Mennonite writings on evangelism and mission. After a few minutes of scanning, I was intrigued and read on. Now I am, obviously, writing the forewordfor a number of reasons.
First, God's Call to Mission is a work of love. David Shenk explains that he was born and grew up on a pioneer mission field in Africa, among people who had never heard of Jesus Christ. There in Africa he became, as he describes it, "a voluntary and joyful captive of Jesus Christ and his church."
Shenk also writes from the standpoint of one who spent his entire life involved in the mission of Christfrom his childhood in Africa to his time working with steel crews as a Pennsylvania student, from his work with young street people in New York to urban church planting in Kenya.
