Acknowledgments
Many people have contributed to this book, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank at least some of them.
A number of those involved in interview research at the University of Michigan were particularly important, not only in helping me to define and shape my own ideas, but in clearing the methodological path ahead of me. First and foremost among these is George Rosenwald, whose critical acumen and dedication to the interview method were like a steady beacon illuminating the dark. Also of enormous help was Barnaby Barratt, who introduced me to the literature that provides much of the intellectual framework of this book.
Other people, too, made contributions in a variety of ways. Ellen Gross acted both as friend and teacher and supplied in her own work the model upon which this investigation is based; Tod Sloan provided intellectual camaraderie and a continuous stream of new ideas; Sue Miller combined a sympathetic understanding of interview research with a warm friendship; Joel Hencken played an important role as friend, critic, mentor, and gadfly; Bob Green, Rick Ochberg, Hank Greenspan, and Jeff Evans all gave critical feedback and support in the right proportions; and Debbie Jackson worked long hours as my most important critic and ally by offering a variety of comments and suggestions, helping me to prepare the final manuscript, and reinforcing my own self-esteem with her encouragement, support, and belief in this project.

Dick Mann played a crucial role in the publication of this book, and I wish to express my appreciation to him for the time, effort, and encouragement he offerred. I would also like to thank the members of my doctoral dissertation committee, Jack Meiland, William Rhodes and Howard Wolowitz, for their support of the project which led to this book and for the feedback they gave me in connection with it. I am particularly grateful to my committee chairman, Eric Bermann, who scrupulously respected my efforts to develop my own ideas, but who always demanded that I do so in a thorough and rigorous way.
The most important contribution of all, however, was made by a group of people who cannot be named. They are the subjects in the present investigation, who generously shared the most personal and painful aspects of their lives with me. They must remain anonymous for reasons of confidentiality. But their cooperation in this project is gratefully appreciated, for without it there would have been no project at all.

One Self-Esteem and the Problem of Meaning
At the end of the last century, William James expressed a sense of uneasiness. Although he himself was one of the founders of American psychology, James was disturbed by the trends he saw developing in the field. He warned against the tendency to treat human nature as a mere technical problem, and he suggested that the basic facts of inner lifethe
