Acknowledgements
The existence of this volume in Mediaeval Philosophical Texts in Translation is largely due to the help and encouragement of the Reverend Raymond Macken, O.F.M., the coordinator of the critical edition of the works of Henry of Ghent, at the De Wulf-Mansion Centre at the Catholic University of Louvain (K. U. Leuven), Leuven, Belgium. I gratefully acknowledge his suggestions, inspiration, and encouragement. I began work on the translation of Henry's Quodlibets on human freedom with at most a mild interest and gradually came to see that Henry of Ghent had interesting and important things to say on human freedom. I hope that this volume will lead others to find in Henry a source of philosophical inspiration and reflection.
This volume also owes its existence to the generous help of my colleague and friend, Dr. Lee Rice, of the Department of Philosophy at Marquette, who had been assistant editor of this series for the last three volumes and who has contributed greatly to the present volume as well. To him I also express my deep gratitude and appreciation. Finally, I want to thank Mr. Steven Barbone, a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy, who has spent many hours of careful work in proofreading the text and in producing the camera-ready copy for the printer. His work on this and the other recent volumes of the series is deeply appreciated.
