FOREWORD
Ever since Pope John XXIII pulled down the curtains that veiled the historic animus between Judaism and Christianity and between Catholicism and Judaism in particular, there has been literally a new world aborning in the field of ecumenical relations. At their very best, ecumenical endeavors, first restricted among the Christian communicants of faith and then expanded to include the Jews as well, have had a telling impact. At their best they have provided a healthy confrontation of differences in ideas and theological commitments and contexts. At less than their best, they have provided a forum among interested parties for the exploration of common ground. In some instances, the motivations for such gatherings were apologetic; for others, they were disguised evangelism. For still yet others, by far the largest number, they reflected a move towards mutual good will and an appreciation for the other as other and for a more profound understanding of the differences which keep Judaism and Christianity as separate faith communities while underscoring the common ground, which has been called the Judaeo-Christian heritage. I believe, despite the doubt cast upon that designation, that such a common heritage exists, particularly as it has developed in the Western world and, most significantly, in the United States.
