Preface
My editions of The Life and Death and Parentator are based on extant copies of the first printings of these rare works, and they include the authors' errata, when noted. Modern typographical characters have been used; for example, the long s has been changed to suit contemporary type. Italics have been deleted except for titles of books, quotations or apparent quotations, and expressions in foreign languages. But the peculiarities of the Mathers' capitalization, punctuation, and spelling (reflecting the nonstandardization of the English language at the time) have been preserved. This procedure gives the reader a sense of the text as it was experienced by the colonial reader and also prevents the obscuring of any possible plays on words intended by the Mathers, especially Cotton. This means that some words (e.g., privilege/priviledge, Parliament/Parlaiment, renowned/renouned) will appear in various forms in the text.
Obvious misprints have been corrected either by the silent deletion of the mistaken successive printing of the same word or by the use of bracketed inserts, which are also inserted in a few places to interpolate small bits of needed information. In order to avoid confusion with my brackets, Cotton Mather's brackets have been converted to parentheses. Note numbers have been added to the texts so that the reader may conveniently find annotations.
The annotations are as complete as I could make them. Unfortunately, much of the world of books so vital to the Mathers has become utterly obscure and in some cases lost to our times. I have provided, with the help of colleagues, translations for all the Greek and Latin passages, except in the instances when the Mathers provide an adequate one immediately after the citation. Unless otherwise noted, I assume responsibility for these translations. I have deleted two very brief, hard-to-decipher Greek passages from article 32 of the Parentator, both of which Mather translates; the deletion is indicated by three spaced periods. And I have identified major passages or echoes of passages from Scripture, although the Parentator evinces numerous other minor allusions.
Except for these modifications, the texts presented are faithful to the original editions.
