Acknowledgments
Many people have helped me in many ways during the researching and writing of this book. I am grateful to the persons I interviewed who generously shared with me, a stranger, very painful details of their lives. William Carter, the deputy attorney general of California who handled the case against the Feeling Therapists, carefully explained its legal history during our interview. John Hochman, M.D., also spoke with me and helped me find people to talk with.
Professional colleagues have been extremely gracious in sharing ideas and reference materials. I thank above all Richard Ofshe, of the University of California at Berkeley, and Margaret Singer, Arlie Hochschild, and Charles Sweeney, all of UC Berkeley, for their assistance. I am grateful to John B. Williamson of Boston College for having been my mentor since my undergraduate years at that school.
Michael Ames has been a wonderful editor, and his comments have greatly improved this book. The anonymous reviewer's critique aided me in rewriting. Others who have read parts of the manuscript and greatly helped with comments include Claire Renzetti, George Dowdall, Dan Curran, Judi Chapman, Alison Williams Lewin, and Rick Malloy, all colleagues at St. Joseph's University. Judith Lasker of Lehigh University and Vicki Smith of the University of California at Davis also provided valuable insights on several chapters.
Beth Tarrant provided research assistance par excellence, as well as child care on occasion. Donna Tozer and Marny Reardon also helped with research. Denise Shaw and Joanne Devlin aided in various ways with preparing the manuscript, and provided moral support.
Two other individuals made it possible for me to work by taking wonderful care of my children. I thank Sharon Naughton Russell and Priscilla Baxter.
I am also grateful to friends who have stuck with me through thick and thin: Julie McDonald, Ricky Jacobs, Jacki Reich (who helped with the subtitle for the book), Jan Singer, Evy Bogen, Jerry Himmelstein, Liz Symonds, Linda Wardlaw, Patty Ratliff, and Yigal Arens.

Finally, my family has enabled me to complete this book. My mother, Agnes Ayella, has offered various kinds of support at all stages of the project. My husband, Larry Silver, has as usual been a constant source of encouragement and support. Michael and Rachel, my children, have inspired me with their enthusiasm, curiosity, and energy.
