I dedicate this book to my Mom and Dad.
To my father, who always taught me there are no dreams worth giving only half your heart to.
And to my mother, who in teaching me to read put the entire universe, the great adventures, and the profound thoughts of the wise, the great, and the daring at my fingertips.
To these two indispensable and priceless gifts I owe every good thing in my life.

FOREWORD
Throughout American history, Americans of all backgrounds venerated the Founding Fathers of the United States. There was good reason for this. It can be argued that never before had such a large group of great men gathered in one generation in one place. And certainly never before had such a large group of great men founded a nation.
Whether one views this as the hand of providenceas most Americans, including such rationalists as Abraham Lincoln, haveor simply as an extraordinary coincidence, the greatness of these Founders was not in dispute.
And there is proof of their greatness: the greatness of the country they founded. It has always been my belief that a tree can only be measured by its fruit. One cannot claim that a certain tree is an orange tree unless it produces oranges.
Yet, as obvious as that measurement is, many people reject it. When I studied Marxism at the Russian Institute at Columbia University, defenders of Marxwho were to be found virtually only in the academywould argue that Marxism is a great idea despite the genocides and totalitarian regimes and movements that those who embraced it produced. They would argue real Marxism had never been tried. The trees really were orange trees despite the fact that they repeatedly produced poisonous fruit that had nothing to do with oranges.
So today we are told over and over that all the Muslims who engage in atrocities in the name of Islam arent really Muslims. But what else are people who cite much or all of the Quran by heart, fast every day of Ramadan, pray five times a day in the direction of Mecca, and cite Sura and verse to defend everything they do?
The fruit produced by the American tree has been a country that has been greatest force for good and the greatest fighter against evil in modern, if not world, history. This country has also been the most open to people of every background, providing more people of every faith, creed, race, and ethnicity more opportunity to better their lives and those of their children than any other. And it developed rapidly into the freest country that ever existed because of the Founders commitment to liberty.
Thus, wherever American troops have remained, the country in which they remained prospered in every wayand became free countries for the first time in their history. Think of Germany, Japan, and South Korea. And despite the lies told about America among the worlds left-wing intelligentsia, America has become the least racist country in world history.
Ah, but what about racism and slavery? we are repeatedly asked. And what about the fact that so many of the Founders were slaveholders?
Racism and slaveholding have, of course, been terrible stains on the American moral record (as they have on the moral record of almost every society in history). But the Founders, including those who owned slaves, sowed the very seeds that ended American slavery and enabled this least racist country to develop. That is why considerably more Africans have come to America of their own free will than ever came on those hideous trans-Atlantic slave ships. For half a century, black Africans have known what most American professors dont know or wont acknowledge: that America affords them more opportunity to prosper than anywhere else on earth; that Americans regard a man or woman from Ghana or Nigeria or Kenya who becomes an American every bit as much an American as a tenth generation White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.
One of the many national tragedies of our time is that the vast majority of Americans born since World War II have little or no acquaintance with what the Founders believed. Or, even worse, they have only the absurd view of them inculcated by our universitiesthat the Founders were nothing more than rich white slaveholding males looking out for their own self-interest.
This is the reason Joshua Charless book, Libertys Secrets, is so important. If the amount of research in this book had been done by a large staff at a research institute, one would be impressed. That he did it on his own is nothing short of awe inspiring. And that it was done by someone so young gives one hope that, despite the libels of America that permeate our high schools and universities, some Americans still know the truth about America and its Founders.
But that is not all. Joshua Charles is, first and foremost, committed to telling the truth about the Founders. He does not shy away from the problems inherent to the Founders either as human beings or as thinkers. They were, after all, humans as well as products of their time and place. But they were great humans and gifted visionaries, devoted to liberty, thanks in large measure to their understanding that liberty is only possible and sustainable when God is understood as demanding it, as its author, and as its guarantor.
For these reasons and more, this book has the makings of a classic.

Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.
