ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This book has been a long time in creation. I first thought of the importance of the concept of "the sacred" as being central to the social scientific study of religion twenty-five years ago when I taught at St. Thomas Moore College in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Since then, the individuals who have helped me in this project are fellow academics: Bill Zwerman, John Thompson, David Klein, and Keith Brownsey. Staff of Broadview Press in general and Michael Harrison in particular have walked with me through the last stages of the book. Angela, who has stood by me for the last six years, has encouraged me significantly in many ways.
