INTRODUCTION
The Best Piece of Advice I Can Give You

T his book is a collection of insights designed to help you understand the Bible. Since Im a biblical scholar and professor with over twenty years of teaching experience, Ive made a career of this sort of thing. Theres a lot about the Bible that I think people should know. My own journey in Bible knowledge has convinced me theres one fundamental insight that, if faithfully observed, will help tremendously. Its the best piece of advice I can give you:

Let the Bible be what it is.

What do I mean? In simplest terms, Im suggesting that the path to real biblical understanding requires that we dont make the Bible conform to denominational preferences. Dont filter the Bible through familiar traditions. Dont make it sound modern. Dont turn it into something it isnt. Just let it be what it is.

The insights I offer in this book are informed by the fundamental idea of letting the Bible be what it is. When we let the Bible be what it is, we can understand it as its original readers didand as its writers did. Ive applied this idea to the Bible and the people of the biblical world. Each chapter aims to provide insights for helping you understand Scripture.

Some of what you read will sound unfamiliar. Thousands of years separate us from the world of the Bible and the culture of the people God used to produce it. They werent us; we arent them. What they wrote is still important today, even vital, but we can only accurately discern the message if we let them speak as they spoke.

As a help to taking the Bible on its own termsunderstanding it in its own contextsI hope readers will avail themselves to my book Brief Insights on Mastering Bible Study. That resource will introduce readers to tools for moving past English translations and surface readings of the Bible. Some of the ideas introduced in this book are addressed in detail in my book The Unseen World: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible.

In my experience, letting the Bible be what it is has not only made it more comprehensible but has also made it an endless fascination. I hope this book puts you on the same path.

PART 1
LET THE BIBLE BE WHAT IT IS
CHAPTER 1
Let the Bible Be What It Is

I n the introduction, I told you that the best piece of advice for understanding the Bible I could give you was let the Bible be what it is. I need to unpack that statement a bit.

Letting the Bible be what it is means interpreting the Bible in its own context. Bible students talk a lot about interpreting the Bible in context. When most readers consider context, they think about the verses preceding and following whatever passage they happen to be looking at. Context involves much more.

There are many different contexts that, even today, dictate how we should understand what we read. For example, the world in which we live provides a context. If I wrote the word text on a blackboard (or whiteboard) today in a room full of college students and asked what the word means, I would hear very different answers than I would have heard twenty years ago. Students today would immediately think of a wireless, electronic message. Their worldview is dominated by technology. That wouldnt have been true a few decades ago. That was a different world.

The type of writing or document dictates how we should understand whats written. In literary terms, this refers to genre. If I was looking at the word court in a legal document, Id interpret the word much differently than if I was holding a tennis magazine. The word treat in a doctors note means something different than it would if you found it on a grocery list. Genre is a context that is crucial for interpretation.

There are many other examples. Your culture, religious thinking, political system, family unit, and social structure all influence how you processes the Bible. We might know that intellectually, but we often fail to embrace the fact that the biblical writers wrote for their immediate audience, who had contexts quite different than our own.

Interpreting the Bible in context means interpreting it in light of the worldview in which it was produced. Filtering the Bible through our worldview or any worldview that came after the biblical period means altering how the Bible was originally meant to be read. We need to let the Bible be what it isan ancient work from another time and place. To apply the Bible to our lives accurately, we need to know what it actually teaches.

CHAPTER 2
Dont Second-Guess Gods Decisions in Inspiration

I n my experience, some Bible students are concerned that the worldview disconnection between us and the ancient biblical writers means that the Bible cant speak to issues of our time. That isnt the case. While the Bible is a premodern and prescientific book, the truths it asserts are timeless.
