HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

This book is filled with over 1,200 practice questions to help you master the SAT. Follow these steps to get the most out of these 8 practice tests:

  1. Read about the SAT structure in the next section. This way, youll know what to expectnot only as you work through the book but, more importantly, on Test Day.
  2. Begin your practice! Buying this book has given you an advantageafter youve worked your way through the exams, the format and timing of the SAT will be second nature to you. All you will have to concentrate on is improving your skills in the areas that need work.
  3. Keep track. Turn to the Score Tracker on page xvi, where you can track your score as you take each exam. Keep a record of your scores and watch how much you improve from test to test.
  4. Assess your strengths and weaknesses. After you finish each test, carefully read the detailed explanationspay attention to the questions you got wrong, but dont forget to read about the ones you got right. Its important to note your areas of strength as well as weakness. Take your own personal inventory of the skills youve mastered and the skills you need to work on.
  5. Watch your scores improve! After youve made your way halfway through the book, compare your scores on Test 1 and Test 4. Youve made progress, havent you? See if your strengths and weaknesses have changed. Then work your way through the remaining tests, building skills and SAT competency along the way.

HOW THE SAT IS STRUCTURED

The SAT is 3 hours long, and 3 hours and 50 minutes if you take the optional Essay. Its primarily a multiple-choice exam, with an optional written essay and some grid-in math questions as the exceptions. Its divided into five sections: one Evidence-Based Reading, one Writing & Language, one Math without a calculator, one Math with a calculator, and one optional Essay.

HOW THE SAT IS SCORED

You gain one point for every question you answer correctly; you lose no points for answering a question wrong OR for leaving a question blank. This means you should ALWAYS answer EVERY question on the SATeven if you have to guess.

SAT TEST DATES

As a general rule, its important to get one SAT score under your belt by the end of your junior year. This way, you know where you stand as you plan your college choices. Plus, its likely that youll improve your score by taking the exam again, because it will be familiar to you.

The SAT is administered on select Saturdays during the school year. Sunday testing is available for students who cannot take the Saturday test because of religious observances. The SAT exam is offered in January, March, May, June, October, November, and December of each year. Check the official College Board website at collegeboard.org for the most up-to-date test dates.
