Introduction
I would like to begin by acknowledging my debt to all those people whose thoughts, ideas, theories and writings have made this book possible. Throughout this handbook, I have tried to reference the original source of material, but this has not always been possible. It seems to me that most ideas and writings are developments, enlargements and elaborations of other people's work and that this is especially true in the field of mental health. I will take this opportunity firstly to apologize to any who may feel that their ideas are being reprinted as my own and secondly to claim little originality for these pages.
The idea of bringing together this conglomeration of material in handout form stems from a number of sources. First, in the clinical psychology department where I work there are two old filing cabinets full of rather tatty, poorly printed handouts. Some of these have been written by members of the department, others have been brought in by trainees on placement, whilst others have been borrowed or copied from other people. These handouts have been very popular and in constant demand. For a number of years I have been meaning to rewrite and retype them; that wish has now been fulfilled in this collection. Second, I strongly believe that printed handouts can have a very useful role to play in some types of therapeutic intervention. I remember one occasion when an anxious client informed me that she always carried my handouts around in her handbag and, if she was feeling anxious on the bus, she would read them and feel reassured. We all forget things, particularly when we are feeling upset, and having material assistance in the form of these handouts can be of great help to many people. Third, cognitive behavioural psychotherapy is largely about challenging and changing people's thinking, as a way of helping them change their behaviour and the way that they feel. To do that effectively, focused, relevant, written information is very important. These handouts are the result of an amalgamation and condensation of a wide range of material, presented as concise single page documents.
The handouts should be used as an aid to a therapeutic intervention, not as a substitute. They should be used as tools. When you buy a tool box, you do not expect to find instructions on how to use a chisel or a wood plane. Similarly, in the case of this "tool box" there are no written instructions. You select the appropriate "tool" and apply it as you see fit. References are provided if you or your client need further information.
