INTRODUCTION

When I mentioned to a number of people that I was writing a book on understanding, I began noticing that many of them responded by displaying the same facial expression: a look of wonder and contemplation. I knew the exact thought they pondered before they even spoke.

Theyd say, Understanding...the Bible? Understanding...what?

Id just smile and say, No, just understanding.

How in the world can you find enough information to write a whole book on such an abstract subject as understanding?

I shared with them a brief revelation concerning the topic, and afterward, the proverbial light bulb of understanding lit up over their heads.

Ah! I get it now...wow!

I came to expect these and similar types of initial responses as I presented the "understanding" message. To be honest, I was myself pleasantly surprised when the Holy Spirit revealed such an untouched theme to me. Early in my exploration of the subject, I heard this comment: "Just when you thought every major topic in the Bible had been preached, written about, discussed and/or published on, God unveils yet another.

Even a pastor friend of mine remarked about understanding, saying, Ive been to church every week of my life and have ministered in over 60 countries, but Ive never even heard one sermon on understanding.

I myself am 45 years old, and having been a church-goer since infancy, Ive attended thousands of church services. At no time had I ever considered understanding to be a prime issue to teach or preach about because it simply wasnt a popular theme that Id heard ministers share. I did know that the Bible declares, ... in all thy getting get understanding." (Proverbs 4:7, KJV) I had also heard several preachers say that we are not to lean to our own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5) That was about the extent of my knowledge concerning understanding.

What subjects in life do you deem to be major? Which valued reference would you elect to use that would support your choices?

The Holy Bible is a highly recognized resource that presents vital subject matters and answers to everyday problems in our lives. The 2013 State of the Bible report produced by the American Bible Society reveals that a majority of Americans own a Bible and believe what the Bible says. An impressive 88 percent own a Bible, 80 percent say the Bible is sacred and 61 percent wish they read it more often.

These statistics make overwhelmingly clear why even across religious divides, the Holy Bible is the number one bestselling book of all time. Undoubtedly, its pages include unmatched wisdom and advice for dealing with all of lifes problems.

The Sacred Scriptures, another term used when referencing the Bible, are paramount. This is the literal Word of God. Psalm 138:2 even declares that God has magnified His Word above all His name, meaning, if God Himself disobeyed even one part of His own Word, He could no longer be enthroned as King of the Universe.

With that in mind, contextually speaking, certain topics are considered important because of the way theyre introduced or mentioned in the Bible. The subject of understanding has equal, if not greater importance alongside many other points of attention in Gods Word.

Themes such as faith, love, wisdom, righteousness and healing are dwelt on extensively in the Scriptures. We find these especially important because of how the verses tend to command our focus when theyre discussed. Therefore, since Proverbs 4:7, KJV, relates that in all we get, we need to get understanding, the attention bestowed on understanding reveals its high level of importance.

In the King James Version of the Holy Bible, the word understand appears 91 times. The word understandest appears four times; the word understandeth appears 11 times. The word understanding appears 160 times, and the word understood appears 37 times. Thats a total of 303 times, which is more than the words joy, grace and believe can be found, inclusive of their derivatives.

Due to the fact that understanding is so frequently mentioned in the Bible, I wanted to conduct a search before titling this book. I was instructed years ago that before deciding on a books title, searching for that title at Amazon and other similar sites is wise.

My search yielded a startling discovery. I couldnt find a single book entitled Understanding or any other title discussing only this subject.

I used the Holy Bible as the sole, written resource to build material for this message of understanding. The Holy Spirit, the only other Source of information Ive accessed for this project, gave me many revelations concerning understanding, and the knowledge offered me fills this books pages.

The Holy Spirit also shared with me that understanding brings success. He explained that success is the continual occurrence that comes about when we strive through understanding to fulfill our lifes mission on this Earth.

When God created our lives, He didnt ask Himself, What am I going to do with this child? My studies have led me to conclude that God creates a purpose, and at the same time, He creates an individual to fulfill that purpose. I believe the Lord then places that individual in a set of intentional events called life. As we journey through life, purpose reveals the assignment that God expects to be faithfully executed until completion. The working toward that end is true success.

Success must first begin in us before it can be presented by us. Understanding applies a molding effect on our minds and character, shaping us into that which God desires for us to become, resulting in imminent success.
