FOREWORD
Raymond A. Moody, Jr., MD, PhD
Two years ago I received a captivating e-mail from an anesthesiologist in Southern California. His name was Rajiv Parti, and the purpose of the e-mail was to make me aware of his profound near-death experience (NDE).
I get hundreds of e-mails and letters of this kind each year from people who simply want to tell me about their NDEs, but this one stood out for a variety of reasons, including the fact that he was a medical doctor, a profession that has as many NDEs as the regular population but generally keeps them secret for fear of being stigmatized by their peers.
But there were other reasons that this NDE was special. One was that Raj had visions of two previous lives. Although it is common to hear of past lives from those who have NDEs, Partis experiences were different. He saw himself as an Indian prince in medieval times who was mercilessly and senselessly whipping the poor. He also saw himself two hundred years ago as an Afghani poppy farmer who was addicted to opiates from the poppies that he farmed for a living.
His past life experience was extremely detailed and presented explanations for aspects of his personality in his current life that he wanted, needed, to change. As he wrote in his e-mail to me, [During my past life review] another wave of awareness washed over me: if I lived again, I would have to break these patterns completely, and live differently. Otherwise he would be destined to repeat them.
In this aspect alone, that of past lives being revealed during NDEs, the publication of Rajs otherworldly adventure will add a whole new dimension to the rational study of near-death experiences. The elements of past life memories demand attention, and the publication of his story will link the study of NDEs with reincarnation in a way that will take near-death studies in a new direction.
Another unique aspect of his NDE was a visit to hell. Accounts of such visits are rare in NDE literature. Some researchers feel they take place often, but that there is a stigma in telling of such a visitthat admitting to a hellish NDE will somehow make one evil. That wasnt the case with Raj. He fearlessly recounted his experience of hell in total, representing it as a teaching tool that revealed flaws in his character that had to be remedied. For Raj, his visit to this realm emphasized his materialistic lifestyle and gave his late father an opportunity to save his son from falling into hell, a fate worse than death. Having his father save him was especially ironic, given that the two had had a rocky relationship during his fathers lifetime. Now, at the edge of hell and clearly in a spiritual world, the two bonded as they never had before, and Raj understood and forgave the harsh behavior he had been subjected to by his father. Where he was haunted by his paternal relationship, he now understood why it had gone so poorly and generously forgave his father. He also learned that the sins of the father dont have to be visited on the son, which changed the way he interacted with his own son.
As a result of these events and others covered in this book, Raj experienced a profound personality transformation. Many people who have had NDEs learn these lessons of profound transformation, and when they come back from their NDEs, they deeply change their interactions with their fellow human beings. Yet it is difficult for many to stay on this new path. They are, after all, still human beings in a human world.
Raj has stayed on track with the message of his vision, and he has done so at great cost.
After his NDE, Raj gave up his anesthesiology practice and has been working on a form of treatment called consciousness-based healing. This is not a form of healing he devised, but one that was revealed to him by the guardian angels that were with him during his NDE and remain with him to this day. Despite the hardships of changing the focus of his profession, Raj is dogged in his determination to bring this form of treatment into practice. His whole philosophy of healing and living has changed. As he wrote to me in that first e-mail, My job is to put one step in front of the other and follow the path faithfully and with trustjust like I did during the NDE, holding my fathers hand.
He wrote to me in that e-mail:
I was being told [by the Being of Light] that it was not my time to leave yet, and that everything would be all right but my path now was going to be as a healer. I was told that I would have to leave anesthesiology and materialism behind. The Being of Light told me: Now it is time to be healer of the soul, especially of the diseases of soul, of the energy body, addiction, depression, chronic pain, and cancer.
I was told that this was the reason I had to experience the diseases that had befallen me personallyso I could have empathy for others, so that I would know how it felt to be in their shoes.
I once had the opportunity to share the stage with Raj. It was at a small consciousness conference in Arizona where the conference organizer had asked him to tell his story. I was sitting behind him, and shortly after he began to talk, I noticed that most of the people in the audience were wiping tears from their eyes; a few were sobbing. Then I realized something I didnt expect: tears in my own eyes . Despite hearing tens of thousands of NDEs in my lifetime, I was deeply moved by the words of redemption that came from Raj.
