For centuries, the language of science has been mathematics with its subfield of geometry, which deals with shapes and figures and their relationships in space. Leonardo da Vincis understanding of geometry and art revealed certain roots, such as the Fibonacci sequence and the golden meanbasic languages found universally in nature and expressed in every culture. Albert Einstein viewed the world essentially as a geometrical structure. Today, diverse disciplines such as parapsychology and mythology, along with pioneering new sciences such as astrophysics, cosmology, and neuroscience, explore the underlying structure and order of the universe through geometry.

Recent research in the emerging field of consciousness studies suggests that mathematics actually supports the idea of the universe as conscious. Emerging mathematical models imply that everything, from an electron to the universe itself, has consciousness in principle and lets you put a number on a systems degree of consciousness, from the simple forms of consciousness of an electron or other basic entity to more complex human consciousnessthe former may combine to make the latter.

Mathematics has been propelled incrementally throughout history, with one discovery making the next one possible. From the earliest discoveries in geometry to the most recent studies in consciousness, mathematics is evolving, as is the expanding universe it attempts to understand. Perhaps mathematics itself reveals each new layer of the mystery as our consciousness evolves to grasp it.

It has been quite a challenge to condense into a single volume what scientists and spiritual traditions have been occupied with for millennia. The content is not comprehensiveI have had to be very selective about what individuals, traditions, terms, and discoveries to include. And, even as the book goes to press, new theories arise about the structure, content, and purpose of the universe (of which there may be more than one).

Nature remains our greatest teacher and the ultimate source of mathematical and spiritual insights. By watching a bean plant grow upward, I came to understand chirality. In a trees branches, I saw fractals, and in a nautilus shell, the golden mean; playing music taught me that sacred geometry is the root of musical harmony and rhythm. I hope the content, limited as it is, inspires each reader to delve further into the unfolding mystery to which sacred geometry holds the key.

Islamic contributions to mathematics are many, as illustrated by the work of 9th-century Muslim mathematician and astronomer Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. The contributions of the vast Islamic empire (which incorporated mathematical developments from India and Greece) go back at least as far as 825 CE when al-Khwarizmi wrote his famous treatise. Translated into Latin as algebra, it became the source of what we know today as algebra, whereby letters and other symbols are used to represent numbers and quantities in mathematical formulas and equations. Al-Khwarizmi is thus known as the father of algebra and, by some, as the grandfather of computer science, for his development of the mathematical concept of the algorithm, a set of instructions or steps designed to perform a specific task in mathematics.

Among the first peoples to keep written records were the ancient Egyptians. Their earliest form of writing was hieroglyphics, which became the ancestor of most writing systems in use today. It was composed of about 1,000 distinct characters, many of which are recognizable pictures of what they represented. The implementation of a writing system meant that detailed records could be kept of complex designs for buildings such as the pyramids; for canals and irrigation channels, which allowed for cultivation of land that was distant from water sources; and for water reservoirs in case of drought.
